Growing up in a place heavily influenced by France and all its culture like Morocco, I developed a new sense of self apart from my African roots. Morocco may be known for its Mediterranean foods, its beautiful architecture and mosaic style and its beautiful beaches and sand dunes of the Sahara but its French influence is hardly ever mentioned. Due to the French colonization of the country, I grew up speaking both French and Arabic and went on to attend private schools under the French educational system. This is where I learned proper French with all its rules and uses as well as proper Arabic.Since I was not obligated and expected to know my grammar and conjugation and all the other aspects of French until I started school, I realized how challenging it really was. However, like everyone else in my class, I pulled through until I graduated high school with a French diploma. I would have never made it through school if it were not for my teachers who gave me ample support and understanding whenever I succeeded and, more importantly, whenever I fell short. They became role models and motivated me to do well and to not give up to not only make them and my parents proud but myself as well. This is the experience that I hope I provide students with.When my own daughters were going through the same French system I went through in Morocco, I helped them with their homework and assignments almost every day until they finally understood it well enough to go through their own by themselves. Of course, I still helped them every now and then but they are now proficient French speakers and know as much grammar, colloquialisms, vocabulary and slang as I do. I even helped out their friends at the time and felt overjoyed at their success- I was very proud. I was a volunteer tutor for over 12 years until I moved my family to Texas. Here, my daughters tested out of the most advanced French classes of their schools but their friends still came to me. This was the time I learned that French is a much more complicated language for English native speakers. There are far more rules and styles in French that are not observed in English, such as gender roles. It took me a little while but I learned to help their friends get the grades they wanted and learn some French along the way. I learned a lot from my students along the way and want to transform my experiences into something I can do every day.I strive to be not only a teacher but a mentor at the same time. To become an educator whose influence is observed outside the classroom- at interviews, jobs, restaurants, parks, conventions, etc. My biggest gain comes from seeing my students do better in school, gain self-confidence and being proud of themselves, as their success is a reflection of both my methods. By teaching a language with which I grew up, I hope to both gain and give new cultural perspectives and share my love for the language.

I am currently a student at the University of Missouri Kansas City as a part of their 6 year direct medical program. Medicine is my passion, and I'm thrilled that we are able to interview patients in the hospital and learn from them very early on in the process.The best teachers I've ever had have been more than just adults. They were passionate about the material they taught, and that passion was carried over to me. That is the main thing I hope to show students. A passion that will help them understand the material better.One of my favorite parts of tutoring is getting to know the students' learning style and how they think. The best part is that I have just recently taken all the subjects I have listed to tutor in. I am a recent graduate from UW-Whitewater where I double majored in History and Political Science and Minored in German. Throughout the last three years of my undergraduate career I worked for the on-campus tutoring service. During this time I was a supplemental instructor for Historical Perspectives and College Literacy. I believe that tutoring is truly the most effective method by which to master subjects that are difficult. I understand the challenges that come with learning, I struggled with many of them myself. My favorite subject in school has always been science. If there was a class I never wanted to skip, it was always some type of science, and when it came time to choose a college major I already knew I wanted to be a biologist! While learning about all the different aspects of biology, genetics, insects, marine life, and plants were my favorite focus areas. So when I decided to go to grad school it was an easy pick to become an Entomologist! Being any type of scientist requires heavy math, communication, and reading skills, so I have been refining my skills in those areas as I went through college and then grad school.I have also learned how to communicate things in lots of different ways, including sign language (ASL), art (painting and drawing), and presenting online via Zoom. I was hired as a substitute teacher last year as I finished up my degree, so I also learned how to communicate with lots of different aged people! As your tutor, I will work with you and your specific personality to best teach you what I can. I have used a lot of visual representation in the past, as well as having the student talk through the lesson to see if they could teach me the information.I have been to Belize to study marine biology, farms around the US to study insects, and have "been" many places to present via Zoom! I am a Garifuna American from the Bronx, NYC. I graduated from Allegheny College in 2014 with a dual degree in Psychology and Spanish. I am currently a PhD track graduate student at the University of Texas at Austin in the Spanish and Portuguese department. My focus is on women and their identity formation on the Caribbean coast of Guatemala. I have had experience preparing lessons, editing papers, and teaching college student as a Teacher assistant. I love the idea of tutoring because I get to interact one on one with students. I hope that students learn as much as they can from my lesson and hopefully I learn from them as well. I see tutoring as a give and take between the student and tutor.I focus on the oral history and traditions aspect of anthropology along with aspect of ethnography. My job will be to guide you through the reading and understanding of the work researchers do in various communities. There will be key vocabulary words and concepts that might require further independent research if the student is interested.I have been studying Spanish for seven years now. If the student wishes we can focus on different aspects such as grammar, literature, writing, reading, speaking and or listening. I will leave it up to the student to decide where they think they need more help. I am happy to do a little of everything as well.
