Ever since bringing refugee children up to and beyond grade-level mathematics while tutoring in the mid-2000s, I have always been motivated by a spirit of service to community, society, and humanity at large. Teaching and tutoring is one small but essential part of that ethos.

I began teaching English and math to middle school students in 2012. When I was working at Urban Science Academy in NYC, I remember one particular student of mine who had anxiety when taking tests. They become scatterbrained and unfocused, unable to stop shaking their leg and playing with their pencil, rather than using it. A few weeks leading up to the state tests, I led students in a class debate while teaching a unit on argumentative essay writing. Through my support and guidance, this student spoke with confidence and poise while using evidence to back up his claim. This moment solidified my passion for creating an inquiry-based learning environment where students are critical thinkers, feel empowered, engaged in the material they are learning, and inspired to speak their opinions confidently. In the five years I have been teaching, I am most proud of building valuable and trusting relationships with my students. These relationships spark higher motivation for learning and more positive and healthy social interactions. In my 7th grade math classroom this year, I worked with a student who had consistently scored low on his quarterly assessments up through this year. He struggled with impulse control and had a difficult time focusing for longer periods of time; yet he was very bright, hard working, and asked questions in class everyday. After I worked with him in a small group setting and helped him build confidence, he jumped 30 points. This was a huge success and confidence booster for him. As a tutor, I will bring the qualities I have developed as a classroom teacher, creating a safe environment where students can think outside of the box, make mistakes, and take control over their own learning, to my tutoring sessions.

I graduated summa cum laude from Duke University with a BSE in Biomedical Engineering, and I will be continuing my education this fall at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. My interests in math and science led me to pursue an engineering major in college, but ultimately my passion for helping others steered me towards a career in the field of medicine. In my free time, you can most often find me hanging out with friends, playing basketball, working out, or eating pizza. One of my favorite methods of helping others is teaching. As an older brother, I have been teaching in some forms throughout most of my life. In high school, most of my teaching experience came from annual basketball camps that the varsity team would hold for elementary-age players. In college, I gained plenty of experience on the academic side of teaching, as I was a TA for an introductory computer programming class, a paid peer tutor for physics, and, for three years, the treasurer of a Duke-based high school tutoring organization. I am very invested in my students' success, and nothing makes me happier than helping them to finally grasp a difficult concept. I know that every student learns differently, so I always start my tutoring sessions by first trying to learn what the student's strengths and weaknesses are. After allowing them to work through and explain a few problems in front of me, I try to tailor an individualized teaching method to best suit each student's specific needs. While my methods may not be the perfect match for every student out there, I can promise that I will always be a patient, diligent, and understanding tutor, and I will be genuinely dedicated to helping each of my students achieve their goals.

I am currently a doctoral candidate in clinical psychology, but I have been tutoring ever since I was in elementary school. Because not everyone learns the same way, I feel that it is easy for students to miss certain tidbits or whole subjects in the classroom, and it can quickly feel like it is too late to catch up. My goal is to work together to pick up the pieces that were lost or are close, but not quite there: learning the way you want to learn and the way you learn best rather than having topics taught at you.For standardized testing: I have taken the special classes and labored through the workbooks to prepare for taking the exams myself. The trick is to learn the test and know how to beat it with the right tools, and I am eager to pass along what I have learned from years of studying for and taking standardized tests. There is nothing quite like sitting down in the testing room and feeling cool, calm, and collected, and I want to help others feel confident, not terrified, when they take their exams.

I am a tutor with Varsity Tutors specializing in writing and theatre. I have a large background in both fields, having been both previously staged and published. I attended Columbia College Chicago and graduated in 2015. Since then, I have worked hard to keep experimental theatre alive and well in the city of Chicago. While at Columbia, I worked as a tutor of fiction writing; this is where I get my passion for tutoring. I have always loved school and, more especially, the act of learning itself. I am a kind, gentle soul who will gladly put in many hours prep time off the clock. So let's get to learning!!!

I am a 2015 graduate of the University of Virginia, where I received my Bachelor's of Science degree in biochemistry and a minor in biology. I graduated a member of Phi Beta Kappa. While in college, I was on a pre-medicine track, and I am currently applying to various MD programs around the country. As of now I am living in Richmond, VA, where I also work as a medical scribe. In the past I held a series of paid and unpaid teaching positions for science classes, where I realized I had a talent and passion for helping students succeed in their classes. These positions include one-on-one tutoring sessions, being a teaching assistant for lecture classes, and aiding other teaching assistants in lab classes. Through these experiences I became proficient in many different teaching styles, allowing me to cater to a variety of different types of students. My approach to tutoring is to provide high quality education using an interactive teaching plan. My goal is to create an active learning experience where I first guide students through difficult concepts and then reinforce these concepts through problem solving. I usually start with a problem that requires knowledge of the subject, and lead the student through it. Over time, as the student becomes more familiar with the concept enough to solve problems him-/herself, I can remove myself from the equation. My hope is that through me my students can develop good studying habits and a passion for learning and the sciences.
