Session Summaries by Phonics Tutors

Phonics Tutoring review by Samantha in Norridge, IL
We continued to work on the student's orientation lessons and weekly lessons for English symposium classes. She worked on a descriptive essay workshop assignment for which we created a character web and wrote a paper on her best friend. The paper needed to incorporate a detailed visual, emotion, and overall description of her friend. It also required two personal anecdotes and dialogue. We then completed a vocabulary assignment and played an online game for which she had to get a certain number of vocabulary synonyms/definitions corrected before moving on. Lastly we posted a discussion response to her teacher's prompt regarding her favorite fiction and nonfiction book that she read.

Phonics Tutoring review by Katharine in Norridge, IL
We had another good session today discussing the student's essay. We spent most of our time working on her introduction; she was able to nail down a strong thesis statement, and then from there build her introduction. She had really great ideas, and her use of language/vocabulary was varied and advanced. She used quotations from the text to highlight her ideas and set her body paragraphs up very clearly in the introduction. She's going to send the introduction to her teacher for thoughts/feedback, but overall, she's really ready to write the bulk of her essay. With her strong introduction and detailed outline, I think she is confident that she'll be able to complete the rest of the essay efficiently on her own.

Phonics Tutoring review by Lalitha in Norridge, IL
Instead of writing sentences with her vocabulary words, she had typed up responses to the reading comprehension questions I had given her regarding "The Story of an Hour". We looked over the questions, and I helped her with grammar, namely comma placement, apostrophe placement, and tenses. Next, we looked at the handout I gave her last time that contains 10 steps for writing a successful essay. Using "The Story of an Hour", we discussed how to plan and write every part of the essay, such as the introduction, body, conclusion, and thesis statement. She participated in giving examples and coming up with ideas. When prompted, she also discussed aspects of the story that contributed to her insight of the story. For homework, I told her to practice what we had learned and to put together an essay about the topic we discussed. Her biggest challenge is grammar, so next time we will take a closer look at some grammatical concepts.
