Recent Tutoring Session Reviews
"On Saturday, the student and I finished our work through the math section. We worked on multiplying variables with exponents, properties of distribution and FOILING. Again, with the student, a lot of these concepts are new to her. However, she does seem to have a solid background in math. Her fundamentals are sound. Accordingly, she is able to take to the new ideas like FOILING rather quickly and apply them to other more complex problems. Next week we will move on to the verbal and reading comprehension sections of the test."
"This session we worked on the quantitative, verbal, and reading comprehensive sections. The math section went pretty well, despite being especially challenging. The verbal section was his strongest, as most of his answers were right and he finished with a time to spare. We'll start on the reading section next time."
"We did a review of the practice test I assigned a few days ago. The student did much better this time. Her test is tomorrow, so there isn't much time to work on more material. We are planning on having another short session tonight."
"The student and I went through a set of sample problems from the tutoring services diagnostic test for the new SAT. He performed well, but had trouble with certain types of problems, such as reading graphs, complex numbers, and evaluating compound interest. Next time we meet, we will focus specifically on geometry, which he hasn't used much since his sophomore year."
"The student and I worked on a series of mini essays that he is to turn in for AP English at the beginning of the school year. Helping him with these essays enhances both his writing ability and his reading comprehension of literature, both of which are significant components of the SAT verbal section. This is why I am classifying our work as SAT preparation."
"The student and I worked on ACT Reading and No-Calculator Math. On Reading, we focused on going back to the passage, especially for vocab questions and two-part questions. On Math, we specifically reviewed story problems that turn into systems of equations and finding common denominators for rational expressions. At our next session I would like to work on Writing & Language and Calculator Math."
