I am a Highly Qualified High School Math Teacher. I currently teach Pre-Calculus and Geometry. In the past I have taught Algebra and Pre-Algebra. My students often say that they have disliked math in the past, but they have changed their view, and my class is one of their favorites.

I graduated from University of California, San Diego with a degree in Communications. In college, I was fortunate enough to hold several research positions with one of the foremost scholars of Child Development and Education Studies, Professor Olga Vasquez. Under Professor Vasquez, I studied the 25 year old program "La Clase Magica", which integrated UCSD students with ethnically diverse, low income communities and youth all over San Diego county through an after school education curriculum. The principles of the program are that children can learn through nontraditional measures such as technology, play, and self-expression. All of the communities involved were bilingual communities such as the Spanish immersion program in South County and the Kumeyaay native people of East County. I tutored children K-8 in all subjects, especially English, Grammar, Reading, Writing, problem solving, storytelling, Math, organization, and study skills, while pertaining to the open curriculum of "La Clase Magica". I have also tutored elementary-aged children through the YMCA Mentorship program focusing on daily homework tasks and study skills. Since graduation, I have spent the last year living and working in Washington, DC in the nonprofit sector. I thoroughly enjoyed my work but realized I needed to return to my roots in education. I really enjoy time spent tutoring and I love to make the tutoring process fun through games, positive reinforcement, and teamwork. I believe that every child has a unique style of learning and it is the tutor's job to discover and uplift the child's learning process. When I am not tutoring or learning, I love to read, watch Jeopardy, discover new music, and go to my favorite Mexican restaurant.

For many years I tried to monetize myinterests in art and music, and this led me to a long period of teaching Appalachian style fiddlingto kids and adults. In 2016 I got certified to teach math and science in order to work at aresidential treatment facility for at-risk youth. In a multi-grade classroom with just a few, veryvolatile kids, I had the chance to give them the time and the safe learning environment theyneeded to move forward in school.That school closed down in 2021. In stead of taking a job in the public schools I chose to dotutoring so I could continue to engage directly with individual students. I really enjoy giving myfull attention to one child at a time. I listen closely to understand the unique learning style ofeach student and try to give each child what they need to make that work for them.In the time I've been with Varsity Tutors I've helped kids with math in grades 4 through 11, andseveral kids with science and other subjects. I studied elementary education at the University of Houston and graduated in 2012. I am also a certified teacher for Pre-Kindergarten through siSixth Grade. Now I am a 4 year veteran teacher! I have been teaching in the elementary level for 4 years in an urban environment. Most of the students that I have worked with have been at least 1 grade level behind. One of my goals as a teacher is to ensure the success of my students regardless of how far behind they are. I have experience in a number of subjects and approaching subjects in different study methods.It's been my experience that once you find what study approach works best for you, doing well in school follows suit. I come with a number of different study approaches, and I like to try them all within sessions until we identify what the student prefers. I then work with my students to create a new study schedule using the new method instead of the old one (ie., flashcards vs. rereading the chapter once or twice). I also typically like to communicate with the student's teacher once or twice early in on tutoring to gain a sense of their perception of the student, how s/he teaches class, if the student is missing any assignments, if there is anything we can do for extra credit, etc. I think this helps remind the student that we (parents, teachers, tutors) are all here to help, and that we want the student to succeed, rather than punish the student.That being said, I am a huge believer in intrinsic motivation. In my opinion, intrinsic motivation will help students in ways that no physical, tangible reward ever could. I believe in my tutoring abilities, and I want my students to succeed, therefore I do everything I can to help them succeed. If I can help my students work hard, and feel comfortable and confident in class, then they will do well. I like to work with my students in a way that demonstrates to them how personally rewarding academic success can be.

Hi, I attend "THE" Fort Valley State University in Fort Valley, Georgia. I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communications. My concentrations are Public Relations an Broadcasting. I will graduate in December of 2018. I began teaching online English for students in China and Japan a year ago. I have been tutoring however since high school, where I was an honor graduate with a 4.0 GPA. So far, I have enjoyed every second of teaching. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, singing with my family, and hanging out with friends. I'm also a Motivational Speaker. Three very successful techniques that I have adopted over my time tutoring are as follows: The Pause Procedure allows students voices to be heard more often than my own, preventing them from zoning out and losing interest; Think - Pair - Share allows students to reflect when answering a question and encourages discussion and collaboration; and Personality Explanation which permits students to add energy and their own personal touch to the answers they provide. I am passionate about teaching because I enjoy being able to have a positive impact on a student's learning experience.

I find a lot of joy in helping my fellow classmates at the University of Delaware better understand concepts that I myself have grasped. And there is no better feeling than when someone is truly grateful that you have given them the knowledge and tools to succeed in a course where they felt there was simply no hope and that they "just couldn't get it". The reality is that everyone is capable of understanding any subject, it just has to be communicated in the right way and the proper amount of time and work has to be put in. I am a recent medical school graduate currently taking a research year. I used to tutor with Varsity Tutors before matriculating into medical school, and coming back to assist my fellow medical professionals with USMLE tutoring feels like somewhat of a homecoming. During my time with students, I feel like patience is one of the most important things when trying to get through to a student, and coincidentally, my name means 'patience is good' in my native language. I look forward to helping students understand what they never thought they would be able to master, and I feel a personal sense of accomplishment when I can help a student work through their apprehensions to get to this stage.

I always focus on my student's weak areas in order to help him/her strengthen them. I also work with them to understand why they are having trouble. Lastly, I push my students to continue practicing so they don't get complacent.
