My name is John Britton Buttrill, and I am an educator working in a global context. I have worked as an English Literature teacher for the past five years and will spend this year traveling throughout France & West Africa. I hold two graduate degrees, an MFA in creative writing and an MA in English education. I was a member of our school's Equity Committee and co-creator of a mentorship group for male-identifying students of color. During the 2020/2021 remote-learning school year, I utilized a variety of technologies, including Google Classroom, PearDeck, and Padlet. Lastly, I had the highest student-attendance rate in our high-school.As a teacher of literature and literacy, I employ a Critical Pedagogy using the Socratic method. My practice is grounded in equity and social justice, and thus I challenge my students to interrogate the world around them. I did my postdoctoral research in Cell Biology and Biochemistry at SUNY Stony Brook, where I was subsequently a research scientist. As a graduate student, I was a teaching assistant for general chemistry, undergraduate organic chemistry lab, and advanced organic chemistry lab. During my years doing undergraduate and graduate research, as well as my time spent as a postdoctoral researcher and research scientist, I supervised undergraduates starting their own research careers. The most valuable lesson that I have learned in my career is not to be afraid to make mistakes. Struggling through a subject can force a student to see problems from different perspectives, which leads to more confidence and better problem solving ability. The trick is to filter out the stress of struggling and focus on acquiring the skills necessary to master the subject. My role as a tutor is to help students gain this focus and increase their self confidence in the learning process.

I received my BSN from Valparaiso University and started my first position in the Pediatric Intensive Care unit at Children's Memorial (now Lurie Children's) in Chicago. My MSN in Parent Child Health Nursing from Rush Univerisity started my career path as a Clinical Nurse Specialist and Staff Educator at Larabida Children's in Chicago. I love working with Special Needs Children and their parents, helping them to understand the needs of their children. I expanded my practice to pediatric home care with high tech kids on ventilators, feeding tubes and other equipment. I loved teaching other nurses, caregivers, and parents about kids and approaching them at their developmental level. My leadership skills have been used as an Assistant Director, Coordinator and Director of Home Health Services and Education.My adult nursing experience includes ER where I loved the role of triaging. I also have adult home health care, hospice care and public/community health experience especially working with immunization programs and senior health centers. At the core of my professional practice is always patient and family education.When I became an Assistant Clinical Professor at Valparaiso University, I loved my role of assisting students with their assessment skills and application of the nursing process. I enjoy working with older students who may have life experiences and other degrees that they bring to their nursing education. I try to share my passion for nursing with traditional students as they prepare to become part of the future workforce. I enjoy tutoring students, helping them to understand the didactic content and applying it to the clinical scenario. When students become confident and competent in their knowledge, I love seeing the change in their nursing practice! It's like seeing the "lightbulbs" turn on.
