In May 2021 I will graduate from Eckerd College with a B.S. in Marine Science (Biology Track) and a B.A. in Spanish. Specific roles that I have been involved with in regard to teaching, mentoring, etc. are numerous. Ever since middle and high school I have worked with kids younger than myself. I have been involved with my church and been a senior intern and a leader on mission trips. As a senior intern I was in charge of planning events for the high school students and then executing them in a timely manner. As a leader on mission trips, I would be the person that other high school students turned to if they needed something. In high school I was the captain of the varsity soccer team which gave me the chance to be a leader on the team. I would lead the team in practices when the coach was absent and would ensure that the team remained as cohesive as possible. I achieved this by checking in on my teammates each week to see how they were doing. Continuing in high school, I was given the opportunity to be a peer mentor for freshmen students. I was in this role my junior and senior year and what it looked like was having lunch with the same group of freshmen each Friday and asking them how their week was and if there was anything I could do to help. Furthermore, I was able to lead Bible Studies with this group of guys during my time as a peer mentor. I served as someone that they could look up to and come to with any questions in regard to their high school career. In high school I received the Ronald Reagan Student Leader award which is given to one student each year who exhibits exceptional leadership qualities. In the summers of 2018 and 2019 I served as a camp counselor for a Christian camp called Camp Timberline in Estes Park Colorado. During this time, I was in charge of about 12 kids ranging from ages 6-17 and I served as a soccer coach as well as a mountain adventure counselor. As a soccer coach I was tasked to develop a curriculum and come up with drills and games that would not only keep the kids engaged, but also allow them to improve their skills. As a mountain adventure counselor, I aided in the safety of over 1,100 kids while encouraging them to step out of their comfort zone. Some of my other duties while being at Camp Timberline were included but not limited to leading hikes up mountains at 2:30am, leading discussions ("chalk talks") with kids and encouraged them to ask questions about God and their faith, working with other counselors to ensure cabin cohesiveness, and performing skits to keep the kids engaged throughout the day.My freshmen year of college I took LSDP (Leadership and Self Discovery Practicum) and then I facilitated it my sophomore year and I believe that those two winter terms really taught me about what it means to be a leader, teacher, and mentor and how to put specific skills that I have learned into action. For three years at my college, Eckerd College, I have been a Resident Advisor and I have learned many things in regard to leadership. During my time as a Resident Advisor some of my responsibilities were included but not limited to advising students living in my residence halls, establishing a welcoming community as well as a safe environment for residents, resolving interpersonal conflicts, serving on emergency response rotation for a campus of over 1,800 students, and enforcing and upholding college policies.Ever since high school I have had a desire to work with kids (mainly middle school and high school kids) and my hope as a teacher is to be someone that kids can look up to, be encouraged by, and of course learn from. I am a firm believer in interactive learning! I think it is important to not just teach a student from a screen, but to allow them to have some hands-on learning because that is when I have learned the most as a student. The subjects that I am able to tutor are included but not limited to, Spanish (any level), science (biology, anatomy, genetics, marine science, etc.), and chemistry. I have a passion for teaching and I believe that my experience shows that very passion. Thank you for taking the time to read this and my hope is that you know and understand some of my roles as a teacher, mentor, and educator throughout my life.

I am a third year clinical medical student here in Michigan and am working towards my MD. I am originally from Ohio and graduated from YSU with a BS. I have experience tutoring mostly science subjects at the YSU peer tutor center. I am especially proficient in physics, general chemistry, biology, and biochemistry. My favorite is general chemistry because I enjoy how easy the problems become once you learn how to break them down. My teaching philosophy in general is to break complicated concepts down to the basics, and then have the student teach back to me. I do ask that my students confirm all sessions within 24 hours of start time, just as I will always give a 24 hour notice to you in case I have a change of plans and need to reschedule. This way, I can distribute my time with all students effectively. With my free time I enjoy hiking, playing with my dog, and watching movies.

My name is Matt. I'm a graduate of a top liberal arts school with a degree in Chemistry and a minor in English Lit. I'm now a full-time tutor here at Varsity Tutors. I typically work with high-school students, but I also work with college students as well as younger students.I share with students the ways I learned the things they are learning now, and I like to focus on understanding the underlying concepts. I want students to be able to think their way through the material, and I do that by framing it in a way that makes sense to them. Everything from writing and English lit to Chemistry and Math has a certain logic and sense to it, so I find that if I can show that logic or sense to the student, he or she can grasp the material much better. My profile picture was taken at a lab job at UC-San Diego I had after graduating three years ago, but I found that as much as I enjoyed the coursework, working in a Chemistry lab wasn't for me. Working with students has been much more rewarding and fun.

I am a Doctoral student at the University of Washington in the department of Public Health Genetics. I study how people respond differently to medications because of their genes. As a result, I spend a lot of time thinking about Biology, Chemistry, Statistics, and Policy. I love to teach and work with the Pacific Science Center as a Communication Fellow.I attended Stanford University for both my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry. While there, I researched the immune system and how asthma and allergies develop. After college I managed a summer camp where I developed my love of working with people and the mountains. In my free time, I can be found hiking, backpacking, and snowboarding.

Hello! I am a high school teacher of Introduction to Biology, Algebra 2 and AP Biology. I have been at my current school for the past two years, and taught at another school for two years before that. At my previous school, I taught Environmental Science and Biology. My first experience as a teacher was right out of college, when I taught summer courses in Biology and Algebra 1. I graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY, after attending the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT. Throughout all of my education, I have always been drawn to the sciences, particularly Biology. My major in college was in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Molecular Biology. Because of the enthusiasm and curiosity that my Microbiology teacher in high school instilled in me, I was inspired to work with students to try and turn on that same interest in science after college. My mother has taught for over 30 years, so it must be in my blood! My passion in the classroom is helping students to realize their true awareness of the natural world around them, and I use labs, visuals, models, and a variety of other methods to help them better understand the complex concepts in science. Many students come into the class thinking that the sciences are very difficult and that one must have a predisposition towards them to succeed, but I enjoy showing them that the sciences, particularly Biology, are very simple and elegant. In my Algebra classes, I try to show students how topics can expand beyond the borders of the classroom, also by using a variety of visuals and models. Sometimes, certain students need more than just good analogies and thorough explanations to help them succeed, and this often requires learning effective organizational and study skills. I frequently work with students outside of the classroom to design better ways to schedule their time, and organize their materials. In my free time, I am an avid fan of exploring St. Louis! This is only my second year living in the Midwest and I have been enjoying discovering new parks and neighborhoods whenever I can find time. I like to travel, as well, and visit friends and family on the East Coast, but I feel as if St. Louis has become my new home.

Exhausted, my legs swollen, sweating during my training as a doctor. My legs were giving out a bit during long hours of surgery. It did not bother, because of the immense feeling of gratification that comes with applying my complex knowledge to comfort, heal, and help others. It is through these experiences, feel alive, refreshed, and invigorated despite long working hours. I am reliable and trustworthy, always ready to work as long as it takes to get the work done. I volunteered at Hennepin county medical center, did observerships under renowned doctors. I got a job as a clinical research associate in clinical anesthesia and cardiothoracic surgery with multiple publications. I have always been passionate about being a surgeon. When I started my residency preliminary in general surgery, it was hectic because I was expected to be at 2 or 3 places at one particular time or do 2 or 3 things at one point. In the beginning, I felt, how was it even humanly possible? Weeks later, I learned that it was possible with patience, prioritizing, time management, and strategizing everything we do, be it the studies or the work.Every experience has taught me the skills I need, to listen and be able to hear even when the other person is silent, hesitant, or shy, I learned to be patient when things don't go the way I would want when it comes to certain medical situations or learning/reading about a medical condition but at the same time taught me perseverance, persistence, and motivation to find other ways to improve. I would use the same technique in teaching. If one method does not work, not to get depressed or upset but explore different approaches. I have always felt joyful in sharing my knowledge, whether it is healing a patient or teaching a rising student or a fellow student. I felt the field's necessary traits were more organic to my personality. I believe that learning has to be more visual, fun, and like storytelling. Many of us still remember our favorite movie/book and how the main lead had kicked so many bad guys. Yes, we have to learn and make every subject into our favorite movies/stories. I am here to help you with that.

I am a Biology major from Southwestern University. I have always loved studying biology because I love to understand how life works; whether it be a cell, human body, or an ecosystem. My goal as a tutor is to help the student achieve their academic goals and to help the student become a better questioner. I know that every student learns differently, and I hope to help each student figure out their best studying techniques in order to help them achieve their academic goals.

I have a Master's degree in Public Health and Tropical Medicine from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University. I am currently working on my teacher's certificate and am certified to teach life sciences for grades 7-12 in the state of Texas. I have taken all the prerequisites necessary for teaching and have a probationary teaching license from the state of Texas. I know how important tutoring can be in helping a student improve his or her grades and confidence. I have dyslexia/dysgraphia and benefited from tutoring when I was in school. Because of my learning disability, I understand that each student has a unique learning style. In the past, I tutored students from elementary school up to college. I have a love for science, teaching and tutoring, and look forward to working with individual students and helping them to reach their potential.
