Hi! I'm Rachel. I have a pretty relaxed teaching style and adapt well to all kinds of students. I really aim for students to understand concepts rather than make great test scores. However, great test scores are a good side effect of understanding concepts better.

I earned two BAs in Anthropology and Japanese at the University of Rochester in Western New York.I have been tutoring for the SATs since high school. As an undergraduate, I was a writing coach. When I lived in Japan, I tutored English as well.Because of the practice I gained as an undergraduate, and as a classroom teacher, I now tutor SAT Critical Reading, Writing, Literacy, History, and Japanese.Writing is my favorite subject to tutor. I enjoy the fact that even the most dense research assignment asks the writer to take a stand. Very few subjects ask for a student's opinion, but writing asks for just that.I like guiding students to figuring out the right answer, instead of telling them. Working with students and prompting them to what they need to know allows what they've learned to stick, so they can keep moving and building their understanding. Especially with younger kids, it can be easy just to tell them, but letting them do the work allows them to grow faster than simply telling them how to get the answer.I'm an avid athlete - volleyball and rowing are my sports of choice. I now travel for one and do the other whenever get the chance.I'm also a huge reader. Modern Fiction, the Classics, and books about AsiaIf the above don't occupy all of my time, I have my favorite shows and Movies, House of Cards, Jurassic Park, Miyazaki films.

Graduated from eastern Michigan University with a bachelors degree in Linguistics and a minor in Japanese. I have also spent a year studying abroad in Japan at the Japan center for Michigan Universities in Hikone. As evidenced by my field of study I find that language is what I am most passionate about and more specifically Japanese. perhaps due to my background in linguistics I find that I tend to like taking a more technical approach to the idea of language learning and try to add elements of the science of it into the study. for example, talking about the difference in construction between two languages and how understanding these differences can help with the language learning process. As someone who studied linguistics I have a passion for language learning in all of its forms and I try to impart a bit of that passion on students as learning another language in in my opinion one of the most valuable and rewarding things that a person can do. Outside of academics I am a big fan of film as well as an automotive enthusiast.

AP Japanese Language and Culture Tutor • +8 Subjects
I am a graduate of the University of Kansas with a B.A. in Japanese Language and Literature. I also have a lot of experience teaching English as a second language. Having a military background I have traveled extensively which has helped improve my cultural sensitivity. I have tutored students in Japanese, reading, and ESL. My favorite subject by far is Japanese Language and Literature. I studied abroad in Japan during my sophomore year in college and that put a lot of the cultural information I was learning into perspective. I love to break up common myths about cultures. What I love most about teaching culture and language is that it really opens and broadens people's perspective. I agree with the statement that knowledge is power. Knowledge is only powerful when you know how to apply what you have learned. As such, my teaching style is very active, particularly when it comes to language!

Originally from Marin County, CA, I recently graduated from Whitman College, where I received my degree in astrophysics with a minor in Japanese. I’ve always gravitated towards math and came to appreciate it as a language all of its own. Awareness of math as an invaluable tool came to me later, after I’d developed a strong interest in physicsand astronomy, fields that rely on math heavily. I’ve also taken the time to nurture my passion for the Japanese language and culture. During college, I spent two semesters in Kyoto, Japan, where I participated in an intensive language and emersion program.During my undergraduate years I tutored students for three semesters and saw how I could gently encourage making the subject “one’s own” in a friendly, supportive way. I’m patient and flexible when it comes to changing my approach based on a student’s particular learning needs. Rather than simply showing my method for solutions, I make note of how students tackle problems, and their thinking gives me guidance concerning strategies that will improve on their own methods. I enjoy the challenge of finding novel ways to help students make learning easier. Illustrating how these subjects can be fascinating and relevant out in the real world can help ignite interest in a struggling learner. In my spare time I like to play piano, go on hikes, and shoot hoops with friends.
