How can a tutor help you master the PSAT?

The Preliminary SAT (PSAT) is a standardized test designed to help students prepare for the SAT. There are three different versions of the PSAT. These include the PSAT 8/9, PSAT 10, and the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT 8/9 is offered to students in grades eight and nine. The PSAT 10 can be taken by students in grade ten. Finally, the PSAT/NMSQT is available to students in grades ten and eleven.

The PSAT is divided into two sections and takes approximately three hours to complete. The two sections include math and evidence based reading and writing. The math section focuses on algebra, problem solving, data analysis, and advanced math. The evidence based reading and writing section covers words in context, command of evidence, informational graphics, and text complexity.

Today, the student and I began by working through some math multiple choice. He missed a couple, but only because of small mistakes, not misunderstanding the material. We spent the rest of the time working on the writing section; namely, sentence improvement and identifying sentence errors. At the end of our session, we worked through a few more multiple choice math. Next time, we plan to work through more reading passages.

We covered writing, reading, and math questions today. The student is able to independently work through questions he gets wrong. For the essay section, we discussed how to analyze an argument, how to pick apart the logic of an argument, and what the evidence is for. The student was able to get the gist of the argument and how it was constructed on his own. It helped to systematize the analysis process by posing questions to help him through analysis in an organized fashion, which in turn helped him to organize his ideas into a well-ordered essay.
