Good session today, we completely focused vocabulary. The student did a good job of trying to figure out the meaning of certain words by using the context in which I used the word in sentences. We went over about 100 words and he did well on managing his time on each.

Today we continued to go over Latin stems and vocabulary with the exercises we normally do. In addition, we looked at some academic vocabulary. The student says the list of words I showed her are just not taught in her English classes. She picked out 30 or so words from the list that could appear in questions or directions for which she was not clear on the meaning, such as concise, derive, correlate, evaluate, restate, and synthesize. We went over the words briefly and then she picked three to construct a Frayer model. We will continue to study these. I felt like this was a good use of our time.

The student wanted to start with his math and some problems he was struggling with. We covered the ways to test whether ordered relations are a function, and conceptualizing different scenarios (word problems) as functions. We spent most of our time going through an algebra 1 placement test. He went at a good pace and did well, overall, but he was rusty on concepts he hadn't seen in awhile. We did a quick refresher on writing numbers in scientific notation, laws of exponents, rules of divisibility, multiplying/ dividing/ adding/ subtracting fractions, mean/ median/ mode, unit conversions, solving proportions, and basic probability. He'll need a little more review before his placement test, but he's already got a solid foundation and shouldn't have too much trouble testing into algebra 1. I can have him attempt the algebra II placement test when we meet again next week, which he might be able to take. It's slightly harder than the test we practiced today.

The focus of today's French lesson was past tense. She did very well within categories, although practice is needed in order to make a decision to use the correct helping verb in PC. We plan to meet again before her test on Wednesday.
