The student and I met for another session of ACT tutoring. Once again we practice all four sections of the test. We did some drills where I timed how long it took her to read the passage and then told her when she should be moving on to the questions. This greatly improved her results.

We briefly reviewed the student's homework assignment as well as specific questions and areas he had trouble with. The bulk of our time was spent on the Science portion of the ACT. I explained the importance of efficiently reading the experiment info in each passage before attacking questions. We examined the types of experiments as well as question types. Then we did 3 practice passages - both together and independently with me assisting as needed.

The student and I spent this session reviewing ACT Science. We reviewed a series of practice problems. I wanted to help familiarize her with the style of the ACT Science section, where students must answer 6-7 questions about a single passage. She excelled at the first passage, which presented conflicting views of two unnamed scientists. The questions about this passage mostly tested a student's ability to compare viewpoints and isolate information from a passage. The second passage presented three versions of the same experiment and asked students to extrapolate data and answer questions about methodology. After our work on these passages, we did a brief review of some ACT English. For homework, I asked her to finish the science passages we had started, as well as do some ACT English passages, review some flashcards, and take a practice exam section.
