Recent CLEP Introduction to Business Law Tutoring Session Notes
Today was my first session with the student going over the grammar rules for the SAT Writing. We have a lot of grammar review to cover, but I think that he will catch on to this much quicker and see improvement faster than in the Reading; these rules are easier to apply and practice.
I had the student do practice on all three sections of the test. He worked hard and tried to learn from his missteps. For homework I assigned several sections of the test including an essay for him to write over the weekend.
We reviewed the student's homework (math problems) and went over any she had a hard time with. Then we moved on to synonyms and analogies, the subjects she feels the least confident in. We continued focusing on strategies for when she isn't sure about the word given, though I also stressed the importance of reviewing her vocabulary words regularly so that they become second nature. I assigned a writing sample for homework that we'll review next time.
We began looking over the practice ACT that the student completed since our last session together, completing the English and Math sections. The student scored a 29 composite, several points improved over his past scores, so we were in high spirits all day.
Today we corrected a reading test. Then we worked on a math practice test together. I gave her 6 minutes to do 6 problems. She did the best she could, and then we went over them together. We got through an entire 60 problem practice test today. She is definitely improving on this section of the ACT.
During this session, the student and I went over the math sections from the practice test that I asked him to take prior to our first session. While working on this section, we talked about different strategies that can be used on some of the more difficult math questions on the SAT. At the end of the session, we talked briefly about how to approach the SAT Writing Section.
