I am an undergraduate student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Grainger School of Engineering. I am working to receive my Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering along with a minor in computer engineering. I not only tutor but am passionate in physics and mathematics as they are both the keys to clearly understanding how our world works. I understand every student has many different and optimal ways to learn so I tutor in a way that meshes well with each individual's personality.

I graduated from Wheaton College in 2015 with a double major in Archaeology and Geology. In the future I plan on going to graduate school to get my PhD in Archaeology. I have always loved teaching people about subjects that I myself am passionate about. In the long term I would like to be a college professor, teaching archaeology at a university.My favorite subject to tutor is archaeology, followed by history. Archaeology is an interesting subject because new archaeological discoveries have the ability to change our interpretation of the past. Outside of academia I play guitar and teach wilderness survival. I enjoy archery, woodworking, and making stone tools.

Through my formal education, internships, and jobs, I have gained respect for professions that assist children in educational settings. I have gained valuable work experience while working with children. My first work experience after graduating UCLA was as a Group Leader for middle school students in New York. I advised them on the importance of developing necessary skills while transitioning to young adolescents. Soon after, I worked as an Elementary School Counselor where I supervised children from kindergarten through 5th grade. Currently, I am working as a High 5s Facilitator for Kindergarten students, in where I teach math to students who live in low-income communities.

Since graduation, I have worked in several different colleges doing academic advising and student support. Most recently, I worked for my state department of health and environment, helping to educate the public about how to keep our water resources clean and healthy.While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about math, science and writing. I'm a graduate Mechanical Engineer from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. It wasn't all smooth sailing. My years at grade school and high school were really difficult for me. The mediocre school system in my town left me woefully unprepared for college. I had to put in an intensive year and a summer at a private school, catching up to my peers. The hardest task was learning to study. After a couple of years as an English major, I changed to my true love, Engineering. That's when I discovered that my photographic memory sometimes played tricks on me, which made it hard to get the right answers. I want to save my students from the agony of unnecessary failure.While employed as a machine tool builder, I learned that high-school and middle-school children in town were interested in radio and electronics. We promptly formed a club, cannibalizing old TV sets for parts. I helped guide these energetic kids to earn their amateur radio licenses. We had a great time getting on the air, sometimes from campsites with portable power. What they learned about math, electronics, and physics gave them a big head start when they hit similar courses in school.I was active in the Navy Reserves for more than 23 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer Cryptologic Technician. The Navy gave me valuable insight into teaching a wide range of students. Many needed assistance in math in order to master military and technical subjects. I helped them with that.I have held an Amateur Radio License since 1955, am now an Extra Class Licensee, and an accredited Instructor and Volunteer Examiner with the ARRL. While teaching licensing classes, I was amazed to discover that many smart people had forgotten basic math. I try to correct that, encouraging my students to understand and attempt the simpler mathematical operations. It must have worked - almost all of my students have become licensed.My early interests in photography, canoeing, camping, and hiking have now been supplanted by my love of computers. I have built many computers and done innumerable installations and configurations. I'm currently experimenting with micro-computers and their application to Amateur Radio and emergency operations.My teaching philosophy wants to encourage the "Why", not just the "How" of the subject. Understanding is lots more fun than just turning the crank. I seek an alternate path to understanding if the student finds the first approach difficult. I once read: there are several ways to get on the other side of a stone wall: Climb over, crawl under, or go around. You could even use my favorite approach: Take it apart, go through the hole!My job is to help you conquer that wall.

An African man once said "If you want people to understand you, speak their language." I am fluent in 3 and a half languages. The reason why I say 3 and a half instead of 4 it is because the fourth one is not practiced as much as I would love to. Born and raised in Haiti (Central America), I automatically grew up bilingual speaking both Haitian Creole and French. At the age of 8 I was already proficient in English, by the age of 12 I was introduced to Spanish. In 2007, my family decided to move to America due to political problems. Adjusting to the American culture took me some time, but I quickly understood it because I already spoke the language. Foreigners I encountered throughout my path in life were always eager to speak to me because I understood them in a way that others did not simply because I spoke their language. The power of understanding someone else's language is amazing and can build lifetime relationships. I am here today to help you speak my language so you can understand me and my culture better.

As the eldest in my family, I put even more pressure on myself to do better than great than my parents did. I have been an energetic goofball all of my life and learned to be an effective scholar and charismatic companion at the same time. Seriously, I was (well maybe still am) the class clown since kindergarten. I always performed well in class and in physical education. My struggle was humbling myself so I could learn in a way that would help me retain information as well as be interested in the subjects I was studying. This was something I worked on A LOT in college.I wont say Im there yet, but Im sure my colleagues and professional accomplishments would say otherwise. I make sure to cherish where I came from, what Im capable of right now, and how I want to evolve tomorrow. I look at situations from many angles so I can understand others point of view and be able to help others interpret and understand the topic. Outside of that, I cheer for people making progress which is something I never appreciated until learning became difficult for me (if you are curious, ask me about learning gymnastics at age 22).Did I lose any of you? I received my education from the University of Southern Mississippi with a bachelor of science degree in biological sciences, with a minor in forensic science. I am a certified special education teacher (as well as life sciences) and I currently work in a behavior intervention classroom teaching high school life sciences.I enjoy teaching because it gives me joy to see the 'lightbulb' go on in a child's head when they finally 'get it'. I like connecting real world experiences whenever possible. I love working one-on-one with students because it allows me to give a more personalized attention.I believe in order to reach a student, you have to get to know the person first. By doing this, you learn something about them, such as likes and dislikes and some of the things that they're struggling with, both at school and maybe at home. I also believe in letting the student know a little about me. This helps establish rapport and trust, making the learning process a lot more productive.In my free time, I enjoy painting, sewing, and most things crafty.
