I currently work in Brooklyn in the New York City Public Schools. I am a Special Education teacher and am currently teaching in a 3rd grade classroom. I have experience with students from ages 4-14, and students of mixed backgrounds and disabilities. I believe that every child deserves an excellent education and the support needed to achieve their goals. I am an extremely hard worker and I am constantly trying to find new ways to help my students grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Every child is unique, and I believe it is so important to find what works best from student to student.

My tutoring experience is varied and experienced, having taught all grades K-8, and all subjects for many years. I especially enjoy tutoring grades 3-6 in reading, mathematics and science, and working with exceptional students who are gifted or special education. Science is my favorite because I love experimenting, building projects like soda bottle water rockets, and working for and with wildlife by cleaning up their habitats and raising trout from eggs for release as fry (juvenile fish). Math is exciting to tutor, especially using manipulatives and other forms of representation-we can do that visually online as we work together. Reading for fun is one of my hobbies, but I know how to inspire struggling readers and teach them techniques for making sense of what they're reading.I would describe my tutoring style as rigorous, positive and focused on each individual student and what they need and want to learn to be a successful student in the subject we are working on. Short and long term goals are important to set, as well as learning study skills and work habits that will support their work in any subject area.

I started tutoring because I've always had a knack for explaining things to people, and I've gotten good feedback from students I've tutored as well as friends that I've helped. I've been tutoring math and science for a couple of years off and on, and hope to continue helping people because these are subjects that I want to retain knowledge of for as long as possible. I can pretty much tutor any age or experience level, although my favorite is college level calculus II.I like to use visual and kinesthetic methods to explain concepts to students. I focus on ensuring that students really understand the theory behind why we solve problems a certain way versus just memorizing a formula or function. This method has helped a lot of my students become note confident in their problem-solving skills as well as become more able to learn new concepts easier because they have a better understanding of the fundamentals. In addition to general course subjects, I have experience training for math brain bowls, preparing for standardized testing, and studying for the fundamentals of engineering exam.

For the past 10 years, I have worked with a local non-profit as a certified tutor and part-time teacher. I have provided guidance and support for students as they strive to meet their goals. My experience as an AmeriCorps VISTA has given me the opportunity to create and coordinate programs for youth and community members on a citywide level in Orlando and New Orleans. These programs are still operational today, and achieving their goals of boosting educational attainment and reducing crime.I have helped adults who speak English, but dont know the alphabet. I have helped others get their GED and study for college Algebra finals. I have helped students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in English better, so they can improve their performance in school, on the job, gain citizenship, and make new friends. I work with youth to develop study strategies that will help them be successful in school and in life. I have tutored students to meet, and exceed, grade level expectations in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, ESOL/ESL, and Adult Basic Education. I enjoy working with adults because they tend to be very clear about what they wish to learn and why. I enjoy working with youth because I love seeing the spark of excitement when they begin to understand the magnitude of their potential. My teaching philosophy is that students are most successful when they clearly define their own goals. My young students may want to finish their homework early to have more time for the fun things they enjoy, or improve their grades to stay out of trouble. My adult students may simply need a drivers license to find a better job or free up more time to spend with their families. Some need to pass a professional exam to use their advanced degrees in the US. I have helped them all achieve success. My tutoring style is collaborative. I work WITH my students to help THEM achieve THEIR goals. This is fundamental and very important to me. I choose curriculum and teaching materials based on my students goals, ability, and learning style. The real work belongs to the student, but I do my best to make it as fun and interesting as possible. On a less serious note, I am just a simple nerd who loves learning new things. I love taking my nieces to the Orlando Science Center, watching superhero movies and cartoons, and going to comic book stores. My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman because she stands for truth, justice, and equality even though she sometimes has her doubts about humanity.

Listening is the key to being a good reader. By actively listening to the English Language in conversation and listening to it on the page we come to love its power and its pleasures. As a REACH Mentor at Regis High School and an Activity Head at Brewster Day Camp, I've learned that listening is just as important in being a good teacher. Each child has a different relationship with language, and improving that relationship is impossible without first understanding it.English isn't just a subject taught in school; it's how we access the people and ideas around us. As a tutor, my goal is not only to prepare students for the tests and essays that will be used to evaluate them, but also to give them the skills they need to prosper as members of an English-speaking society.

I graduated from Harvard University in 2012 with a B.A. in Sociology and Government. During my time at Harvard, I tutored various social science courses. Immediately after my college graduation, I joined Teach for America and taught 3rd and 4th grade in a failing public school in Jackson, Mississippi. After I finished my two year commitment with TFA, I moved to Dallas. For my primary job, I currently work with Dallas ISD as a data analyst. I intend to eventually go back to get my Masters in Education and possibly Statistics to continue my career in education policy.I tutor pretty much all elementary and lower middle school subjects, as well as the subjects I tutored in college such as Public Speaking, Psychology and US History. I enjoy teaching test prep as well because I love easing students' test anxiety with strategy. As someone with dyslexia, I have a lot of strategies that help both student with and without learning disabilities remember information and understand it.Outside of education and work, I enjoy sailing, which I have both participated in and coached most of my life. I walked on to the Harvard varsity team my freshmen year and ended up racing at nationals a couple years later. Athletics were a huge part of my college experience so I know how hard but important balancing academics with athletics can be. This caused me to be very organized and disciplined with my study habits, which is definitely something I try to impart on my students. While I think that organization and discipline are important for learning, I also know that fun is essential. My main goal with my students is to foster a general love for learning that persists beyond a specific test, subject, or even my time with them.

I am currently a law student at Northeastern University School of Law. I am a graduate of Miami University. I received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Women's Studies. After graduation, I completed two years of national service in AmeriCorps as a literacy tutor. I tutored adults in ESL and GED Math. I continued as an ESL instructor for three additional years. I have worked with basic phonics and reading through TOEFL prep and editing college level essays. I love languages, so my favorite subjects to tutor are English and Spanish. However, I tutor a wide range of subjects including math and standardized test prep including the LSAT. I am a proponent of trying to find a learning style that works for the student because we all learn differently and need to see material in different ways. In my spare time, I like reading fiction, knitting, and watching movies.
