I currently work in Brooklyn in the New York City Public Schools. I am a Special Education teacher and am currently teaching in a 3rd grade classroom. I have experience with students from ages 4-14, and students of mixed backgrounds and disabilities. I believe that every child deserves an excellent education and the support needed to achieve their goals. I am an extremely hard worker and I am constantly trying to find new ways to help my students grow intellectually, emotionally, and socially. Every child is unique, and I believe it is so important to find what works best from student to student.

I especially enjoy tutoring grades 3-6 in reading, mathematics and science, and working with exceptional students who are gifted or special education. Science is my favorite because I love experimenting, building projects like soda bottle water rockets, and working for and with wildlife by cleaning up their habitats and raising trout from eggs for release as fry (juvenile fish). Math is exciting to tutor, especially using manipulatives and other forms of representation-we can do that visually online as we work together. Reading for fun is one of my hobbies, but I know how to inspire struggling readers and teach them techniques for making sense of what they're reading.I would describe my tutoring style as rigorous, positive and focused on each individual student and what they need and want to learn to be a successful student in the subject we are working on. Short and long term goals are important to set, as well as learning study skills and work habits that will support their work in any subject area.

I started tutoring because I've always had a knack for explaining things to people, and I've gotten good feedback from students I've tutored as well as friends that I've helped. My experience as an AmeriCorps VISTA has given me the opportunity to create and coordinate programs for youth and community members on a citywide level in Orlando and New Orleans. These programs are still operational today, and achieving their goals of boosting educational attainment and reducing crime.I have helped adults who speak English, but dont know the alphabet. I have helped others get their GED and study for college Algebra finals. I have helped students learn to understand, speak, read, and write in English better, so they can improve their performance in school, on the job, gain citizenship, and make new friends. I work with youth to develop study strategies that will help them be successful in school and in life. I have tutored students to meet, and exceed, grade level expectations in reading, writing, math, social studies, and science.My favorite subjects to tutor are reading, writing, ESOL/ESL, and Adult Basic Education. I enjoy working with adults because they tend to be very clear about what they wish to learn and why. I enjoy working with youth because I love seeing the spark of excitement when they begin to understand the magnitude of their potential.My teaching philosophy is that students are most successful when they clearly define their own goals. My young students may want to finish their homework early to have more time for the fun things they enjoy, or improve their grades to stay out of trouble. My adult students may simply need a drivers license to find a better job or free up more time to spend with their families. I work WITH my students to help THEM achieve THEIR goals. This is fundamental and very important to me. I choose curriculum and teaching materials based on my students goals, ability, and learning style. The real work belongs to the student, but I do my best to make it as fun and interesting as possible.On a less serious note, I am just a simple nerd who loves learning new things. I love taking my nieces to the Orlando Science Center, watching superhero movies and cartoons, and going to comic book stores. My favorite superhero is Wonder Woman because she stands for truth, justice, and equality even though she sometimes has her doubts about humanity.

Athletics were a huge part of my college experience so I know how hard but important balancing academics with athletics can be. This caused me to be very organized and disciplined with my study habits, which is definitely something I try to impart on my students.While I think that organization and discipline are important for learning, I also know that fun is essential. My main goal with my students is to foster a general love for learning that persists beyond a specific test, subject, or even my time with them.
