I try to treat every student as a violin student -- lots of feedback and one-to-one attention, not so much lecture.I've been working in education for nearly 10 years, as a tutor, classroom teacher (I am certified in Math 7-12 in Connecticut), and developer of teaching materials. My most recent gigs have been hourly / independent contractor / free-lance, which I haven't put on my resume. I've been tutoring, mostly for the Hamden (CT) school district as a three-quarters-time job but also occasionally for some local agencies. And I've been developing materials for several publishers of math textbooks and web-sites.

I am a graduate of Savannah State University and Armstrong Atlantic State University. I received my Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a minor in teaching and my Masters of Art in Teaching Secondary Mathematics. Since graduation, I have taught high school level math courses 6 years in Savannah, GA. and 5 years in Norcross, GA. While I tutor a broad range of math subjects, I am most passionate about Algebra 1. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for tests, we always seem to have the most fun when the student relaxes and realizes it is okay to make mistakes because that is where you learn. I am a firm believer that every child can learn given the right environment and support.

While winning is largely a function of how it's defined, I consider my own success to be helping my students along a journey to attaining their respective goals. But that journey begins with a first step, at times a humbling step. As a coach and mentor, I value my role as your trusted resource in helping you take those initial steps on your journey to passing the securities exam(s) and onward to a bright future!

After practicing environmental law for 27 years, I decided to change careers. I chose teaching because that is something that has always interested me, and chose social studies because my BA is in history and history has been a lifelong passion. I have a background in law, government and public policy as well, having been a practicing environmental lawyer and having earned a Master of Public Administration degree. As a Scout leader for 25 years, I was very much involved in teaching at all education levels, all the way up to graduate school.Raising my own four children also involved a great deal of teaching. As a lawyer, I enjoyed most working with younger lawyers and helping them become better researchers and writers, and with high school and undergraduate students considering a law-related career. The common thread in these experiences is working with young people one-on-one or in small groups. For these reasons, I believe tutoring plays to my strengths as a teacher. When I was in the classroom, my assessments always used actual AP questions. My students performed very well on their final exams, which were full-length AP tests using questions from past exams, averaging. In world history, I wrote my own test questions, since test banks accompanying the text involved little more than memorization. I try to inject more rigor into my lessons and assessments.I never go into a professional activity with a client without a great deal of preparation. In my economics and government classes, I prepared detailed study guides both to prepare myself and to assist students. I believe my students' performance in AP classes was directly related to these guides. As a tutor, in my first meeting with a student, I will assess the nature of their concerns with the subject. I will review with them the syllabus and their recent exams and assignments to identify the key problems. Problems might include study habits, difficulty with key concepts, and absorbing the sheer volume of material, among other things. Having identified the problems, I will tailor tutoring sessions to the individual student's needs. For example, lessons may concentrate on practice with difficult concepts Many students are visual or kinetic learners, so the use of graphs in economics is especially useful to get to the solution, and to build on basic concepts, even when answering multiple choice questions. In this regard, my study guides will provide appropriate material for helping students. I view these guides as living documents and constantly evaluate and revise them to meet student needs..As a tutor of college students, I will draw on my own experience working with summer interns as well as my education and professional experience. Law, public administration, government, and economics, in addition to US and world history are some of the subjects in my professional repertoire. Most important, because I have taught or practiced in a number of subjects before, I have a wealth of material and information that I can use in my tutoring sessions. For subjects I have not yet taught, I look for useful material on line. In general, I do not view tutoring as something that happens only during the hour I spend with a student. I maintain records on each student's needs and progress, and plan ahead for each meeting so as to tailor lessons to individual needs. I prepare session notes following each meeting with a student to help prepare future lessons and to assess my own performance.

I am a lawyer with almost 40 years of experience practicing law having been admitted to the Pennsylvania and Federal bar in 1982 after graduating from Rutgers Law School. As a result, I have a background in a wide variety of legal areas, most of which involve representing real people. These areas include: consumer and small business bankruptcy and all matter related to people suffering from debt problems, all types of civil litigation, criminal law (including my internship in law school and Court appointed representation of criminal defendants) Family Law, Court appointed Dependency work, wills, deeds act.; and collections, insurance defense and subrogation, My years of practice have taught me how to communicate not only with the Court and my colleagues, but also to clearly communicate the sometimes complex legal issues to my clients. In addition to learning to speak publicly. I have also learned to write effectively when drafting court documents like Motions and Briefs (some of my reported cases are on my resume).I love being an attorney. especially being able to effectively represent my clients in what is often one of the most difficult times of their lives. It may be good to be the King, but for me, practicing law is more rewarding and my idea of fun. Outside of my work, my interests include history (which was my major at Penn State University) reading, swimming, and following sports and politics.

State certified Elementary teacher (K-6) with Teacher of Students with Disabilities endorsement. I hold a Bachelor's Degree in English. Before pursuing a career in education, I attended Katharine Gibbs School of Fashion, where I obtained an Associate of Science degree in Fashion Design and Merchandising. I have more than 13 years of experience co-teaching in self-contained classrooms teaching students with disabilities. Although I love and enjoy working with children of all ages, I've developed a deeper love for students with disabilities. I believe all children are deserving of equal and fair education and that it's my responsibility to equip students with the tools they need to be successful. I am a firm believer in education and how absolutely necessary it is for an improved quality of life. Although I tutor in core subjects, I am extremely passionate about English and Literature. Most of the tutoring services I provide are to assist students in elementary and middle school, however, I have much experience tutoring undergrad and graduate students as well. I'm an advocate for building self-confidence and encouraging students to try their best all while teaching and/or re-teaching foundational skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who specialize in preparing for a wide range of professional certifications, including IT certifications (CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft), project management (PMP, CAPM), finance and accounting (CPA, CFA), healthcare credentials (NCLEX, pharmacy technician), and many others. Tutors can work with you on exam-specific content, test-taking strategies, and practice problems tailored to your certification's format and requirements.
One-on-one instruction allows tutors to identify exactly where you're struggling and adapt their teaching to fill those gaps, rather than having you spend time on concepts you already understand. Personalized tutoring also provides accountability, structured study plans, and the ability to ask questions immediately when you're confused. Research on learning shows that individualized instruction significantly accelerates progress compared to self-study alone.
Preparation timelines vary widely depending on your starting knowledge, the specific certification, and how frequently you meet with your tutor. Some certifications require 2-3 months of focused study, while others may take 6+ months. Your tutor can assess your baseline knowledge and create a realistic timeline with specific milestones, helping you stay on track to meet your certification deadline.
Yes. Tutors work with students at all knowledge levels, from those brand-new to a field to those with substantial experience. If you're making a career transition, your tutor can start with foundational concepts and progressively build your knowledge toward certification-level competency. This scaffolded approach helps you develop both the conceptual understanding and practical skills needed to succeed on your exam and in your new role.
Effective strategies include breaking complex topics into smaller, manageable pieces; using practice exams repeatedly to identify weak areas; and spacing out your study sessions over time rather than cramming. A tutor helps by explaining difficult technical concepts in ways that stick, creating focused practice plans, and providing feedback on your progress. This combination of targeted instruction and strategic practice leads to stronger retention and better exam performance.
Your tutor can help you assess readiness through practice exams, diagnostic reviews, and honest conversations about your confidence level. Most certification exams have published study guides and pass rates you can reference. A good benchmark is consistently scoring at or above the passing threshold on full-length practice tests under exam conditions. Your tutor can also help you decide if you need more preparation time or if you're ready to schedule your exam.
Varsity Tutors works with tutors across many industries and certification types. If you're preparing for a specialized certification, reach out with details about the exam and field—tutors often have expertise in niche areas, and we may be able to connect you with someone who's a great fit. Even if a direct specialist isn't available, tutors skilled in related subjects can often help you master the material and exam strategies.
