I am 22 years old and I recently graduated from the University of Vermont (UVM) in May of 2018 with a BA in English.At UVM, I worked for two years as a Writing Center Tutor. I have taken two semesters of a class dedicated to teaching me how to most effectively tutor. I learned how to work with students with dyslexia, ADHD, Aspergers syndrome, deaf or hard of hearing students, and students with a variety of abilities with writing. Throughout my time at UVM, I tutored over 200 hours both in one on one and group sessions.I also worked alongside professors in the English department as a Writing in the Disciplines Mentor. In this position, I worked with a professor to integrate writing workshops into the classroom. I learned a lot about building curriculum, working at the individual and classroom level, and how to keep students engaged. I feel comfortable and confident with my ability to integrate resources to supplement student learning.My teaching philosophy is that every student is able to succeed in academics. This can only happen if the teaching or tutoring instruction is tailored to the individual needs of the student. I work on getting to know my students personally. I try to understand their strengths and weaknesses as a student. I then work to tailor my tutoring to their needs. For example, If a student struggles with attention, we would do some brain/body focusing exercises before our sessions. If a student is uncomfortable with reading out loud in class, we will work on building their confidence incrementally!I am currently studying to take the Teacher Certification Exam (PRAXIS) so that I can apply to the Alternative Routes to Licensing Program through Clark County School District. My passion is fostering an intrinsic excitement for learning in each student. I graduated from Southwestern Illinois University in Edwardsville with a BS in Mathematics Education. My first job was teaching junior high school math in East St. Louis. Some of my students were nearly as old as I. It was quite an experience for a first year teacher. Very challenging. I moved to the northern part of the state and taught middle school and high school in a small district of 7000 students for 16 years. These experiences were varied. I team taught in a school with no walls. We had students working independently with no direct instruction. Each student was given independent tutoring and allowed to progress at their own pace. I also taught computer intro courses. I moved to Chicago in 1989. I taught high school algebra, geometry, and algebra 2 until I retired in 2016. I also tutored students who were prepping for the high stakes standardized tests they take as juniors. I taught after school programs and summer classes for students who were making up credits in order to graduate. I have learned to adjust my teaching approach for the students I have before me. I understand the concept of learning styles. I have experience with students who are bilingual and are struggling with English as a second language. I have worked with students of all skill levels. I have tried to remain healthy by running and going to the fitness center daily. I enjoy keeping current on the news and going out with friends.I am using this extreme stay at home time to enhance my online tutoring skills and to explore the technology that is being employed to bring education into students' homes. I have also explored the possibilities that this unprecedented time in history has caused some to contemplate a new reality for education. Education may never return to what it was before.

I am an Occupational Therapist with a background and interests in psychology, english, and math. I studied Psychology and Foreign Affairs at the University of Virginia and have a Masters of Science in Occupational Therapy from Tufts University.I have been an educator since I was in high school, I loved tutoring kids of all ages. As I grew older, my passion for teaching drew me to the outdoors where I taught snowboarding and outdoor recreation skills. At other colleges I have taught Biology, Academic and Business Writing, also Communication Skills in Business and Relationships, and Acupuncture. in 2022, Varsity commissioned me to teach small classes preparing students for the standardized Massage Board Exam (MBLEx). My Varsity students have said they make substantially more progress with me than with other tutors. I believe this is because I encourage my students to get to get to know how they learn. This trains the most important aspects of executive function, which is self-awareness - this has been verified by psychologists and researchers on ADHD and I have seen it work in myself and my own children, all of whom have ADHD.
