What is your teaching philosophy?

Keep going. Everything that has happened in my life, good and bad, has happened because I did not quit. Learning is a journey. Keep going.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

After introductions, I would begin by getting to know the student's learning style and what their educational interests are. For example, what they hope to gain from the subject, their strengths and weaknesses, and what they've tried in the past. Gauging where they are now will provide a great foundation to build from.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Confidence is key. Different people will learn at different rates, with different styles. Removing the stigma of educational competition due to needing a tutor or not grasping a subject is important for gaining motivation and learning independently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encouragement is key. My motto in all things is "Keep going!" If the goal is always in focus, motivation remains there also.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find resources that better explain the concept; more specifically, go through it again, asking questions throughout the process, to gauge specific areas that may be difficult to grasp.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Finding their method of learning is important, as people learn differently. Videos, hands-on projects, and relating the ideas to previously understood concepts are helpful.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

An organized and confident tutor yields the same response most times. I also find that interacting with the student to determine their specific needs allows for understanding.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Funny videos and activities help to lessen tension created from learning frustration. I also find that appreciation for how far the student has come is helpful as well.
