IB Biology SL Tutoring FAQ
IB Biology SL courses provide students with a comprehensive introduction to the scientific study of life. Covering a wide variety of core topics such as cells, ecology, and genetics, as well as additional areas of focus that may vary by class, IB Biology SL classes also teach students how to derive meaning from statistical data and analyze the design and results of scientific experiments. Throughout the full length of the course, students learn to produce the correct answers to questions, as well as to explain their thinking and problem-solving in a clear, logical manner while referring to and synthesizing concepts that they have retained from their coursework. For students to whom this sort of demonstrated problem-solving is new or presents problems, the IB exams can cause quite a bit of apprehension, as a significant portion of evaluation consists of short-answer questions requiring the use of these very skills. No matter whether you are struggling to design an experiment, memorize the differences between plant and animal cells, or figure out how to best practice responding to short-answer problems, Varsity Tutors can help. We can help you connect with IB Biology SL tutoring that can bring efficiency and focus to your studies as you progress through your course and prepare for your future exam.
Private IB Biology SL tutoring is distinguished from other study options by its superb level of customization. We understand that your educational experience is unique. The conceptual difficulties you encounter may not be the same as those with which other students struggle. To provide you with the most useful assistance, our educational directors can help you select the tutor best suited to working with you based on your concerns, strengths, and weaknesses in studying biology, as well as the teaching and studying methods that allow you to learn best. Your tutor can then take stock of your current biology knowledge and academic level and design a tutoring plan that will address just the concepts that give you particular difficulty. Unlike in classroom-based review, private instruction allows you to control exactly what you cover during your sessions. This gives your IB Biology SL tutoring an efficient focus and avoids having sessions cover material that you have already mastered. All tutoring sessions take place in a one-on-one environment, so you can have the full attention of your expert instructor. This means that you can have your questions answered on the spot, and if something does not make sense, you and your instructor can work on a particular concept by approaching it in different ways until it clicks for you. When you work with a professional tutor, there is no need to rush ahead or wait for your class to catch up. You can choose where and when your sessions take place. Face-to-face online sessions are available through our live learning platform, if that is the most convenient option for you. In-person tutoring can occur at any location that is desirable to you. That means your tutor can meet you at your school, a café, a local library, or even in your home. The choice is up to you. Sessions can be planned around your busy schedule at a time that works best for you. Weekends, evenings, and daytime sessions are all options when you choose to work with a personal tutor.
Biology can be an extremely imposing subject, but do not let your apprehension about your coursework and the classroom content prevent you from doing your absolute best. Our educational directors would be happy to connect you with an IB Biology SL tutor in your area -- all you have to do is call!

Recent IB Biology SL Tutoring Session Notes
Session covered the student's biology research project. Assisted student in researching and designing PowerPoint project on four plant species. No scores were presented by the students. Biggest concern for the research project will be the student's ability to present in front of an audience. Arrangements are being made for student to practice speech in front of an audience.
The student and I covered natural selection, evolution, and adaptation to various environmental stressors. We discussed homology and analogy, embryology, and development in the context of Darwinian evolution.
We reviewed chapters 1-12 of the student's Biology text book for an upcoming mid-year assessment of material covered up to this point. We focused specifically on:
- The chemistry of life
- Elements and compounds
- Isotopes
- Organic vs Inorganic molecules
- Types of Bonds
- Diffusion & osmosis
During today's session, we worked on preparing for the Biology test. In order to prepare, we began by looking over some review materials that the student's teacher provided. These materials covered a number of topics, including the origins of life, viruses and the lyric and lysogenic cycles, heredity, and other basics of genetics. With the remaining time, we also managed to look over some homework the student was assigned that dealt with the fundamental dogma of biology. Overall, it was a very productive session.
We reviewed a bit on animal behavior, but mostly reviewed practice questions of previous material. I am going to create a short practice exam for her to have extra practice to improve her multiple choice taking skills. She has a really good understanding of the material and has been working extremely hard. I think if we work on her deductive reasoning skills and reading multiple choice questions more carefully, she will do extremely well in her upcoming exam next week!
