I like being able to help someone figure out how to make something work--to help them accomplish something they're struggling with. I love the 'I get it now' moment that comes from when a tutoring session has been successful.

As a recent graduate from Cornell University with a degree in biological sciences and someone who plans to attend medical school in the future, my passion and appreciation for the sciences and medicine is something I consider integral to my identity. My favorite subjects to tutor are biology and chemistry as those are the subjects in which I have past teaching experience in the classroom setting. In particular, my teaching style focuses on rephrasing and remodeling initially daunting concepts and information into bite-sized and digestible bits of information that any student can comprehend. I firmly believe that a lot of what slows students down in the learning process is their preconceived notions of course material. My passion for helping students stems from my experiences as an undergraduate where I can remember on countless occasions feeling lost in the material with little direction on how to approach the curriculum. I can think back to the many times I would have benefitted from having someone who could have guided me through stretches of daunting coursework which led me to become a tutor myself. As a teaching assistant, I discovered my passion for helping students manage their way through courses that many considered to be very difficult. Seeing how they reacted to my assistance reminded me why I applied for the position in the first place and motivates me to help students learn more every single day.

I am a bioengineer who has experience working in the biotech startup industry. I received my Master of Science in Engineering in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience from the University of Pittsburgh. While at the University of Pittsburgh, I started to tutor my fellow peers in Engineering Physics I: Mechanics and Engineering Physics 2: Electricity & Magnetism, and it was then that I discovered my passion for tutoring. Seeing a student not only understand physics, but actually enjoy learning about it was easily the most rewarding aspect of tutoring. Their enjoyment led to success and further study of the material, and I was very happy to have contributed to that. From my experiences, I observed that a teaching philosophy based on constant questioning, student participation, and interdisciplinary learning provided the greatest enjoyment and success for students. Relating the material in a manner which the student understands has always been a priority of mine, and combining this approach with a logical, building-block type style has yielded strong results for me and the student. While I do tutor mathematics, usually ranging from Calculus I all the way to Differential Equations, I am most passionate about teaching physics. It is rewarding to see how a student who learns physics understands and appreciates the world around them on a deeper level. Outside of work, I greatly enjoy going to museums, playing and watching all kinds of sports, hiking and other outdoor activities, reading philosophy, and playing guitar.

I had classmates struggling with stoichiometry, peers needing an algebra refresher, or a group of panicked kids with a trigonometry test the next morning. With a wide range of needs and urgencies, I learned how to break down complex ideas into approachable steps, fill in gaps in their understanding, and tailor each session to meet individual needs. I've guided high schoolers through personalized ACT and SAT prep, sharing my tips/tricks and improving their current test-taking strategies. I completely understand that tough subjects can be overwhelming when one is confused; the learning journey typically leaves you confuzzled/frustrated. However, I'm here to clear the fog. I focus not just on getting the right answers, but on building real understanding. I'm prone to using odd analogies, clear explanations, and customized study strategies that meet students where they are. My goal is to make students feel confident in their knowledge and problem-solving strategy.

During my career I spent time at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, the University of California, San Diego, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and Brandeis University, where I worked for nearly 40 years. I am a firm believer that students learn in STEM fields only by doing, not by merely listening. Thus the core of any tutoring experience with me is working on problems. The most formative experience a student can have is to work through a problem, explaining each step to the tutor as he or she goes through it. Only by explaining the concepts and skills to someone else can one be sure of his or her own understanding. My goal in any tutoring interaction is to assist the student in gaining the necessary skills, knowledge, and confidence to attack any conceivable problem set to him or her by a classroom teacher.

I've seen the best success when students can interact with a complicated concept in multiple ways and pull on their own experiences as metaphors to the system in question - after all, this is part of how science is actually done! Currently in my spare time, I enjoy reading, strategy games, and learning Mandarin.
