Recent Naperville IB Global Politics SL Tutoring Session Notes
Tonight, the student and I began with history. We finished reading and discussing the section on the Russian Revolution. As I read the last few pages aloud, the student added to her notes on the computer. We discussed Lenin, the New Economic Policy, and Stalin.
We then moved on to literature. The student had To Kill a Mockingbird questions to finish, which she made progress on and will finish later tonight. We also reviewed her vocabulary for a quiz she has later this week. I gave her the word and she gave me the definition and used the word in a sentence. She feels prepared, but will continue to review in preparation for her test.
Another great session!
The student and I reviewed her second writing prompt from the novel, "Speak." She was able to clearly identify symbolism and its meaning in the third section of the book. We clarified some misunderstandings about the Dred Scott case and the Missouri Compromise from last session. She then completed the first and second sessions of her end-of-course exam for social studies. The first session was scored at a 92%! The second section will be scored while she completes the essay portion end-of-course exam on Friday. And a final, cumulative score will be calculated for homeschooling purposes. This will be the last week we will be meeting for Social Studies. The student has been assigned two more ACT vocab sheets and another section of reading from our novel.
Today we focused solely on AC: women's role in gov't. This is a lengthy lesson, but she was able to get through a good deal of it. She read and took notes (she is getting more proficient at note-taking), took a quiz (100%), and wrote a few paragraphs comparing women in the ancient Roman Republic to women in politics today. We chose: Angela Merkel, Nancy Pelosi, and Kathleen Sebelius. We did some on-line research, and she summed up her thoughts. She was shocked that they only received the right to vote in the US in 1920. Tomorrow we will focus on English but try to finish this assignment as well.
Now focusing more on skills/writing. Student presented notes for 5 paragraph essay on his book. He crafted a 5 paragraph essay. Reviewed for social studies test. Read a leveled Shakespeare reading/puppet activity.
This week we continued studying for her tests, which she has coming up in the next few weeks. We practiced some math worksheets and went over many of the social studies topics.
We reviewed the causes of the Great Depression and the main points of FDR's New Deal. I saw a couple of old tests, and noticed that she usually does better on essays than she does on multiple choice. This leads me to think that she usually knows what she's talking about, but maybe over thinks multiple choice questions. We will work on this. No concerns or extra practice.
