ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra Tutoring FAQ
Many colleges and universities across the country require incoming students to take the ACCUPLACER exam in order to get a better idea of how well each student has mastered various topics and to assist the school in placing matriculating students into courses of an appropriate difficulty. The Elementary Algebra section of the ACCUPLACER test may seem relatively unimpressive at first glance. Consisting of only 12 multiple-choice questions that involve integers, rational numbers, algebraic expressions, equations, inequalities, and word problems, this portion may initially seem to have little impact on your course selection.
However, this is not the case. Your performance on the ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra section plays a part in determining whether you are placed in a math course that challenges you with new material, or whether you have to spend your first semester of college math courses repeating information you have already learned during your high school pursuits. Brushing up on your algebra skills can help you deliver a performance that demonstrates all of your knowledge on test day, but determining which concepts to review and how to structure your studies can pose a challenge.
Varsity Tutors can help you connect with ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra tutors all across the country who tailor instruction to your specific academic strengths and weaknesses. Our educational directors can take into account your current algebra skills and knowledge, any concerns you have about your review, and your preferred learning style when they help you select the ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra tutor who is ideally suited to help you prepare.
Your tutor can then analyze your current mastery of elementary algebra material and create a series of lesson plans just for your ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra tutoring sessions, focusing on the specific concepts it would most benefit you to work on before exam day. You can work through these lesson plans at your own pace, spending as much or as little time on each concept as it takes you to fully understand it. Your tutor can answer questions and provide feedback at a moment's notice, since all of the tutoring is conducted in a one-on-one environment.
One area students often struggle with is selecting an appropriate study method. There are a lot of different study methods you can choose from, but it can be difficult to determine which ones will benefit you the most. A private tutor can identify your learning style, your weaknesses, and your strengths, which will give them a good idea as to how to develop a study plan that will work for you. Studying by yourself can be a tricky proposition because you may lack the internal motivation to push through when you inevitably hit a wall. A private tutor can help with this because they can help encourage you to keep studying even when you don't feel like it.
Additionally, your tutor can help you master test-taking strategies that can play a crucial role on exam day, especially if you are unfamiliar with the exam structure or are worried about approaching questions that you have difficulty solving. Brush up on your math skills with the help of ACCUPLACER Elementary Algebra tutoring.
Varsity Tutors also offers flexibility and convenience. Our live learning platform enables you to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This allows you to pick a time and location that works best for you. So whether you prefer studying outside, at a library, at your favorite restaurant, or in your own home, a private tutor can meet you there. Contact our educational directors for more information or to let us connect you with an exceptional private tutor today.

Last week, the student mentioned that she wanted to work on poetry. This time, after going over some homework that she had (she's reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" in school), we discussed two poems: Robert Frost's short "Nothing Gold Can Stay" and Poe's "Annabel Lee". The first poem is a good example of metaphor and alliteration, while the latter has good vocabulary and other imagery.
The student and I focused on the English language arts portion of the test, finishing a grammar practice packet that we had been working on. Through our practice, we have touched on important grammar points, such as consistency in verb tenses, how to use commas, punctuation with quotations, hyphens in compound adjectives, and prepositions. We then reviewed the essay she wrote and identified ways she could have improved it, in an effort to take her strong writing skills to the next level. We went over: identifying the most important parts of the question and addressing those more completely, varying sentence structure, fixing small grammatical issues, and using her conclusion to identify the greater significance of the essay to the reader. I asked her to rewrite her conclusion for homework.
I focused on helping the student with her test taking strategies and timing rather than teaching any new material. She some practice math problems similar to the ones on the entrance exam. I had the student work on these problems and some reading and comprehension practice questions while timing her so that she could get used to working under pressure.
Today the student worked on mathematical word problems, linking verbs, and stem list 1. We discussed ten word problems and linking verbs. The student then practiced using linking verbs. I showed her how to use website for practice and how to access stem list 1.
The student is preparing for the upcoming test. We looked over the science portion, and she seems clear on the questions we went over. We finished up with algebra. She is very bright, and she picks up the algebra concepts very quickly.
Today we completed the problem set I created for the student during our last session. Most of the problems were slightly more difficult than the problems in the test prep guide, but they covered the same material. He was able to solve most of them with relative ease. During our next session, we will work on completion time and identifying algebraic equations from word problems.
