I'm a rising Junior at the University of Chicago studying Computational Neurosciences and Fundamentals: Literature & Philosophy. I've tutored 7th and 8th graders in Basic Algebra and essay construction and taught undergraduates Biostatistics and the literature of Valdimir Nabokov, so I'm prepared to work with any age or skill level. When I'm not tutoring this summer, I'll be doing electrophysiological research at NYU's Center for Neural Science and preparing to write my BA on James Joyce's Ulysses. I'm extremely versatile with expertise in a range of subjects and really enjoy helping students learn. I also excel at standardized testing and am excited to share the strategies that made me successful. In my free time, some of my favorite things to do are act, play guitar, and bike along the river.

I am a recent graduate of the University of Arizona, with a BS in Biology and minors in Mathematics and Biochemistry. I am currently working on computer coding and enjoy tutoring students, specializing in test preparation for the ACT, SAT, and GRE.I have nine years of tutoring experience, tutoring students from elementary age to graduate level, as well as working with students with special needs. I particularly enjoy tutoring mathematics, biology, and helping students prepare for standardized tests. I can also tutor in writing and reading, since I have experience as a professional copy editor. My focus when tutoring is student understanding. I believe academic goals are more readily achievable when concepts are understood, rather than formulas memorized. When helping students prepare for standardized tests I focus on taking practice exams and working with students on the areas they need the most help.Outside of school I enjoy hiking, gardening, reading, and cooking. I like to explore new ways of doing things and being outside. I like to try to strike a good balance between learning, working, and enjoying time by myself, as well as with friends and family. I am very organized, but have a rather easy-going personality and enjoy working with others.

The best part of tutoring for me is being able to help someone feel excited and confident about a subject they were originally struggling with. Sometimes people write themselves off as not math people or not readers When faced with a challenging subject, its tempting to think its beyond you. But growing up, anytime I had a question about math, I could go to my dad who taught math at a University level and he would make the subject fun and engaging. Because of that, I grew up loving math.No matter how difficult it was to grasp a concept at first, my dad would approach it in different ways until something clicked and and I felt like I had mastered it. I was really impressed by the difference his patience made and I love tutoring because it helps me do that for other people.I am currently a student at Rice University, majoring in Cognitive Sciences, and I plan on attending medical school afterwards. Between my major and pre-med track, my coursework varies from philosophy to statistics to linguistics to biochemistry and more! My own personal interests vary greatly and so do the subjects I tutor. I think my genuine interest in the subjects I teach helps students to not only get through the class, but also find connect with the things they learn

I am a great tutor because I have an extensive background knowledge of the subject material and I understand that teaching at its essence is a performance art. The teacher must entertain and engage the student as well as communicate the required information. I accomplish this with discussions of useful relationships and background material. Useful relationships include shortcuts between quantities and concepts, and most importantly the use of dimensional analysis to verify test answers. Background material such as the history of science and mathematics is quite effective at not only making the material more interesting but at clarifying concepts and tying them together. The story of what a scientist was trying to accomplish when creating a theory can make the difference between accurately comprehending a theory and therefore its limitations or only memorizing a formula for plug and chug strategies. Of course in test taking, there is nothing wrong with plug and chug approaches except in cases where there are more than one formula that can apply and a deeper understanding is required. I have an extensive knowledge of scientific and mathematical history because one of my hobbies is reading about the history of philosophy and science from Aristotle's Science that later became the basis for the Ptolemaic Universe through Newtonian Physics, Quantum Physics, and Relativity to the modern era's String Theory and Loop Quantum Gravity. I find the historical approach is the only way to really understand physics but seeing how one discovery led to another in the other sciences is fascinating as well.

Hi! My name is David and I recently graduated from Columbia with my Masters in Public Health. I am very passionate about science and I hope to dedicate my career to improving the environment and people's health. I've always enjoyed teaching whether I'm with my students as a TA or just with my friends helping them with assignments. I think understanding difficult concepts can be stressful at times so I hope to make learning enjoyable by simplifying hard questions and boosting my students' confidence.

As a QuestBridge Scholar and an undergraduate biomedical engineering student at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, I am exploring my creativity by pursuing a double major in Asian Languages and Cultures with a focus in Korean, studying abroad in South Korea as a Benjamin A. Gilman Scholar, leading workshops that teach 3D printing and CAD for undergraduate students as the president of 3D4E, advocating for the first-generation and low-income student community as the Outreach Chair of the Quest+ Scholars Network, and getting involved with the Society of Women Engineers' outreach committee. I currently hold a work-study position as an administrative clerical aide in the Institute of Sustainability and Energy at Northwestern and was an undergraduate researcher in the John Rogers Lab. As I look forward with aspirations of applying to graduate school, areas of research in biomedical engineering and biotechnology that I am particularly interested in include biomaterials, pharmaceuticals, and drug delivery systems. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy learning on my own and sharing my experience and knowledge with my peers and other students. I hope to make use of my experiences with academics and learning in high school and so far in my undergraduate career in order to effectively tutor students who may be experiencing the same struggles in learning that I also experienced.

After graduating in 2011 from the City College of New York, I worked as a consultant for Dr. Dewey who then recruited me from Brookhaven National Lab to the Feinstein institutes for Medical Research. That year, I entered the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, and joined the inaugural class as one of three PhD students of the new medical school. My dissertation project interrogated pre-clinical sex differences in the metabolic neural patterns associated with opioid pain management using18-fludeoxyglucose (18FDG) and micro positron emission tomography (MicroPET). I was able to show that distinct metabolic patterns of pain were sex-specific, and confirmed that an animal model could be useful in revealing distinct metabolic indicators of opioid withdrawal and improve the efficacy of therapeutic intervention. As a Research Scientist at the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, I oversee operations of the MicroPET imaging facility as part of the Center for Neurosciences. I have recentl studies include studies of the extracellular cold-inducible RNA-binding protein, (CIRP-/-) and wild type (WT) mice, before and after exposure to binge-alcohol levels. By quantifying glucose metabolism with 18FDG and MicroPET, and using brain-mapping analysis of the imaging data, we can determine if CIRP plays a role in alcohol-induced cognitive impairment. I have served as mentor to many undergraduate and some high school students, and very much enjoy sharing my knowledge base with those that enjoy science.

I am a recent graduate from the University of Virginia, with two bachelor degrees in Neuroscience and Math, along with a minor in Chemistry. I am extremely passionate about science research and worked as a bioinformatician/data analyst at UVA's Center for Brain, Immunology, and Glia. During my four years, I have successfully applied for 3 research grants and 1 scholarship independently. I have published 1 paper in Nature and recently submitted another. I hope to become a medical scientist (MD/PhD) involved in translational medicine, so that I can develop and arm doctors and nurses with new and powerful tools to better combat diseases.
