The student and I reviewed the new SAT and its various changes. He has taken the ACT before and done well, so he should do well on the SAT. I assigned a practice test and several chapters of math review.

We covered all three sections as usual: an assortment of reading passages, three writing passages, and assorted math practice (triangles, algebra, 3D shapes). The student is greatly improving his reading comprehension skills and does well even with questions most students consider difficult. He is only slightly more challenged by writing, so we will focus more on this and on math skills and strategies for the last session.

Today the student and I finished the reading section from our session yesterday, while also working through the writing/ language arts and math non-calculator sections of the SAT. She did well on the English section, but ran into trouble on parts of the reading section and the math non-calculator sections. Encouragingly, she was able to see where she went wrong very quickly and understood why the answer was what is was.

The student and I had a short session this evening, concentrating on math. She's making progress with the questions, particularly the linear equations she's been working on. We backtracked a bit to cover absolute value, as that's something where her understanding was very muddy. She understands it much better now.

The student took a practice test for homework. She got a 26 composite on the test, 2 points higher than her highest ACT. We went over the Science portion of the test, focusing on relationships and careful reading of the questions and graphs. I emphasized to her not to give up too easily on difficult-sounding Science or Math questions, but to know that she has the information and ability she needs to do them. We also went over the Math from the test. We reviewed trapezoids, 45-45-90 triangles, ratios, and line graph inequalities. We ended by going over the Reading section. We focused on making sure that the evidence found backs up the answer choice selected. I assigned her homework from the Math section.

During our session today we worked through the calculator portion of the math section of the test. I didn't have her do the section timed, as I wanted to really key in on the core question archetypes that appear on the test. These involved systems of equations, ratio and linear equations. During the last portion of our session, we went over the essay. For homework, I asked the student to take a look at a series of sample essays to develop an idea of what differentiates high- and low-scoring essays.
