I am a graduate of Reed College with a degree in Classics. I came to Portland five years ago all the way from New York city and fell in love with the community and landscape of the Pacific Northwest. I worked as a peer tutor in high school and college, and have tutored English, Math, Reading, Writing, Attic Greek, Latin, and Humanities. I also spent five years as a Hebrew School teacher where I worked with elementary age children teaching basic Hebrew and Jewish studies. I'm passionate about tutoring because I believe every student can achieve any academic goal they set their mind to as long as they are given the tools for success. I aim to turn every "I can't" into "I know I can." I want to instill in my students a confidence in their own academic abilities and a true love of learning. I like to work with a student's unique skills to help them master new or difficult material. My ultimate goal is to help my students truly comprehend the material, and be able to apply what they have learned when encountering new problems and questions. When I'm not working I spend my time hiking at the Sandy River Delta with my husky puppy, Kili, or whipping up new vegan recipes. I love to read, especially modern fiction and historical biographies, and try to travel as much as I am able; my most recent trip was to Italy, and this winter I am heading South to the Antarctic.

I am also a certified secondary English teacher in Florida through the online TeacherReady program. I have 5 years experience teaching ESL, entry exams (including GMAT and ACT), and humanities (history, philosophy, literature, and creative writing) at the high-school and college levels. I am also interested in writing, both academically and creatively, and languages: I am fluent in French and Mandarin Chinese and can read Latin, German, and Greek. In my ideal job I serve as a medium to help people develop their interests and ideas; at the same time, I love having the opportunity to engage in in-depth discussions, brain-storming, and critical thinking. In the future, I hope to expand my skill-set to include STEM based subjects like math or computer science.

Frequently Asked Questions
Score improvement depends on your starting point and consistency, but most students see meaningful gains within 8-12 weeks of regular tutoring. Students who begin tutoring in the fall typically have time to build foundational skills and tackle practice exams, while spring tutoring focuses on targeted weak areas and test-taking strategies. Varsity Tutors connects you with tutors experienced in helping students move from a 2 or 3 to a 4 or 5, or solidifying a 4 into a confident 5.
The AP Latin translation section gives you 2 hours for about 125-140 lines of text, which requires both accuracy and pacing strategy. Expert tutors help you develop techniques like scanning for familiar constructions first, identifying key verbs and subjects quickly, and learning which passages to tackle based on difficulty. Practicing with authentic College Board released exams under timed conditions is crucial—tutors can help you analyze your pacing patterns and adjust them based on your reading speed and comprehension strengths.
The multiple-choice section tests your ability to understand main ideas, grammar, and cultural context from shorter passages. Many students struggle with inference questions and grammar-focused choices. A strong tutoring approach includes learning to preview questions before reading the passage, marking key grammar constructions as you translate, and practicing the art of elimination—identifying obviously wrong answers first. Regular practice with released exams helps you recognize question patterns and develop confidence in distinguishing between close answer choices.
Many AP Latin students struggle with specific constructions like ablative absolutes, indirect statements, or subjunctive clauses, but these often become manageable once isolated and practiced. Tutors help you pinpoint which grammatical concepts trip you up by analyzing your practice test errors and looking for patterns—are you missing gerunds consistently? Struggling with purpose clauses? Once identified, targeted practice with that specific construction, combined with how it appears in actual test passages, accelerates improvement. Most students need 2-3 weeks of focused work on a challenging structure before it clicks.
The AP Latin essay requires you to synthesize literary analysis with cultural context—it's less about perfect prose and more about demonstrating understanding of the text and its significance. Tutors help you learn the essay structure that scores well, practice organizing your thoughts quickly under pressure, and develop confidence in discussing Roman culture and literature. Many students improve dramatically once they practice writing multiple timed essays and receive feedback on clarity and supporting evidence. Starting essay practice 4-6 weeks before the exam gives you time to refine your approach.
An effective schedule typically includes 5-7 hours weekly of focused study, with tutoring sessions (1-2 per week) embedded into that time. A realistic approach: spend 2-3 weeks building or refreshing grammar fundamentals, 6-8 weeks working through practice passages and released exams by section, and the final 3-4 weeks doing full timed exams and targeting remaining weak areas. If you start in fall, you can build depth; if starting in spring, focus immediately on high-value areas like test-taking strategy and targeted grammar review rather than comprehensive review.
The best AP Latin tutors combine deep Latin knowledge with understanding of how the exam tests that knowledge. They recognize that translating accurately is different from recognizing grammar quickly under pressure, and they coach both skills. Look for tutors who use released College Board exams extensively, help you develop personal pacing strategies, teach you to manage test anxiety, and can explain not just what the answer is but why other choices are designed to trick strong students. A great tutor also understands Roman culture and literature well enough to help the essay section feel less intimidating.
