How can a tutor help you master the ACT?

Taking the ACT is an important milestone for a high school student. You are at one of the toughest points of your academic career, and college applications may be manifesting a large presence over your life. A tutor can ease the process of preparing for this exam by providing expert ACT lessons and advice. By contacting Varsity Tutors, you can receive help in finding a number of top ACT tutors nationwide who can assist you in studying for the exam and achieving the best score you can.

Comprised of four mandatory sections and an additional optional writing section, the ACT covers many different subject areas for which you need to prepare. The ACT English section is 45 minutes long and asks you 75 questions that deal with the rhetoric and grammar of standard written English of the American dialect. In this part of the test, you'll need to think like an editor, finding grammatical and stylistic errors in the provided text and arranging passages so that they best say what they are trying to say.

The ACT Mathematics section consists of 60 questions, and you will have 60 minutes to finish it. You will need to know pre-algebra, algebra, plane and coordinate geometry, and basic trigonometry in order to be prepared for it.

The ACT Reading section consists of 40 questions, 10 for each of four passages, to be completed in 35 minutes. The hard part here is reading the passages quickly enough so that you have time to address the questions to the best of your ability, while not reading them so quickly that you miss or misunderstand information. You will always see one passage each for humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and prose fiction.

As if the time pressure of the reading section was not enough, the ACT Science section will really push you for speed. Again, you'll see 40 questions and have 35 minutes to complete them, but the ACT Science section will challenge you to interpret the data you see both accurately and in a rapid fashion. The good news is that the ACT Science section does not test your knowledge of science rather it tests how you deal with and analyze new quantitative information and opinions.

The optional ACT Writing section gives you a prompt to answer and 30 minutes in which to answer it. The key here is to make a good argument, with a clear, legitimate, and provable thesis statement, supporting evidence, and a strong conclusion.

A private ACT tutor can demonstrate the best strategies for conquering each of the tests sections. For instance, you may need help interpreting various charts on the science section, or in breaking down the passages of the reading section. Whatever it is that is troubling you most, your tutor can work with you to overcome it. By working together in a one-on-one setting, your tutor can pinpoint the unique ways in which you learn and grasp information best, ultimately allowing him or her to put you on a productive path toward ACT success.

Varsity Tutors is committed to helping you find a skilled and professional ACT tutor. One of the benefits of working alongside a tutor is that he or she is flexible and able to work around your schedule. This means that you can find an instructor who can conduct one-on-one sessions at your convenience. Moreover, private tutors are happy to meet you at your desired place. Whether you want to study in a library, school cafeteria, or in the comfort of your own home, a tutor is there to assist you. You also have the option of working one-on-one or over the internet.
