I am an enthusiastic, resourceful tutor. I graduated from Penn State University with my Bachelor's degree is Special Education and my Master's degree in Curriculum and instruction. I am certified in Special Education (K-12), as a Reading Specialist (K-12), PreK-4th grade education as well as Middle School English Language Arts. I love helping students get to that "light bulb" moment. I believe that it is important to get to know each student in order to motivate them to succeed. Providing students with examples that make sense to them and apply to their lives is so important and necessary for success. I've been passionate about helping students for as long as I can remember. I always wanted to play school with my younger brothers! I'm looking forward to working with your family!

I went to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and earned my BA in History and Psychology with a minor in Leadership Studies. While studying at UIUC, I also tutored at the junior high - introductory college course level in social studies and related subjects are my forte. As a tutor, I find that its easiest when the student learns in a guided manner, rather than bland memorization or content exposure. With one on one teaching, it is possible to do this effectively and, with effort, will lead to higher absorption of material - and yes, higher grades.Outside of tutoring, I'm currently a contractor at Scott doing IT work. It keeps me busy but also allows me to use downtime to continue my own education. I'm on track to continue on to earn a secondary education endorsement, and likely won't be stopping there, as I find the technology of education fascinating. I also substitute teach at a few local schools as I'm available, and I'm a pretty avid baseball, soccer, and Formula 1 fan.

I am fully bilingual, and I am a native Spanish speaker. I was raised in a Puerto Rican family, and I spent every summer from the age of two years old until the age of fourteen in Puerto Rico with my Spanish-speaking family. My grandmother spoke Spanish as her first language, which required me to learn so that I could communicate with her and my other family members. I have always had a love of my language and culture. I began working with children at the age of 14, and volunteered in schools with special needs children throughout my entire high school career. I began tutoring professionally at the age of 16, and now have over eight years of experience. In college, I taught Spanish three days a week to middle school children, while tutoring in the evenings and weekends. I took Spanish classes throughout high school and college in order to perfect my writing skills, and in the summer I worked a program called Freedom Schools. In this program we taught the children aged from 7-13 an integrated reading curriculum, while also exploring their creativity through extracurricular activities and field trips. I have always had a passion for working with children of all ages, and teaching as well as tutoring has enabled me to leave a lasting impact on their lives. In the years that I was developing my skills, I also taught first grade religious education. I believe that time and patience is all that is needed in order to change a student's life for the better. Although I gained majority of my experience teaching children, I have also taught adults, and I have tutored college students in the subject as well. Writing in Spanish while in college always proved to be a difficult task for my peers, and I was always happy to lend a hand in order to help them further understand the language. I enjoy working with others in general, and have always been described as a cheerful and optimistic person. In my spare time I am a full time mom and aunt, and I own a small business that I work from home. I also enjoy music, reading new books and learning new facts. I look forward to growing my experiences through meeting new individuals as well as students in my area.

Every student searching for a tutor has a goal. It is my job (and my pleasure!) to help the student reach that goal efficiently and effectively. I love to work with a student and see the light bulb go on, and hear them say "That's easy!" The outcome of our tutoring sessions should be that the student attain a level of confidence that his/her goal will be achieved. While I do have the educational background in my tutoring subject areas, what is most important for the student is that the subject be explained clearly in relation to the student's desired outcome. Many students tell me that I explain concepts in a clear, easy to understand fashion, and I welcome the opportunity to do the same for you!

My goal as a tutor is to facilitate lifelong learning skills. I am a firm believer in the notion that half of the battle of gaining an education is knowing how to learn. Not everyone is able to study the same way so once you know what works best for you and use those skills, you can learn anything! Albert Einstein expressed this idea best when he said, "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid." No one is truly incapable of learning, it's just that we each have our own strengths and that's what makes us individuals.I am currently a second-year online graduate student pursuing a Master's degree in English Education with the State University of New York at Buffalo. I am certified to teach ELA in grades 7-12 and my graduate degree will allow me to teach grades 5-6 as well. In 2014, I received my Bachelor's degree from the State University of New York at Cortland where I majored in Adolescent English Education. I particularly enjoy studying English literature in a variety of genres including novels, journals, essays, and short stories, but reading and writing poetry is my absolute favorite! I have quite a bit of editing and revision experience and I enjoy working closely with students to perfect their writing. As an online student, I am very well acquainted with using technology in order to learn. I have been able to observe how teachers utilize technological applications and software to personalize instructional strategies in order to fit their students' educational needs. I look forward to using digital tools to present information in different ways so that I may demonstrate material clearly and effectively for all students.

My continuous evolvement as an educator and the understanding that students learn in different ways, has led me towardsmulti-sensory learning that is active rather than passive. When I work with students, their learning styles and needs for engagement are at the forefront.Daily, I educate students who learn differently, and success has come to my students when I scaffold to make the abstract more concrete. I have incorporated tactile boards, sky writing, active movement, as well as many anchoring visuals.Such student success has also come through a gradual release method that I use as a framework for my lessons. This includes modeling, guided practice, independent practice and a wrap-up closure.Working 1:1 gives me the opportunity to deeply differentiate to my students' specific needs. I have experience teaching students with dyslexia and dysgraphia. As I create lessons, the focal point that drives such planning revolves around the needs of my students. If you are interested in working with me, I'll make sure to fully hear your students needs to make sure that we are working towards a common goal. I've had experience collaborating with classroom teachers as well. Please also check out my resume so you can see my credentials and teaching experiences. I look forward to the opportunity to work with you and your child towards academic growth.

I am currently a senior at the City College of New York completing a dual degree in mathematics and English with an emphasis in creative writing. I am equally passionate about both subjects and greatly enjoy stimulating others' interest in them through education. As a tutor, I do so by emphasizing the importance of understanding the greater context of the subject into which the specific skills to be learned fit. I find this method to be successful in easing the learning process, particularly in mathematics, as it helps students both to see how the various topics they are learning fit together and to retain the knowledge in the long term. As an added benefit, it also helps to fill any gaps in their education from previous years and improves their ability to quickly absorb new topics in the future. When I am not tutoring or attending class, I spend most of my time reading or writing. I have a large portfolio of short stories, am working on my first novel, and have begun working with professors at school to start getting my work published. I also travel and spend as much time in the outdoors as possible. I have visited almost all fifty states, spent the previous summer hiking in the Indian Himalayas, and am planning a trip to Iceland for this upcoming August.

I am a Ph.D. student in Cognitive Science and Philosophy at the University of Arizona, but I discovered my love for teaching as a high school substitute teacher after graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Highest Honors and Distinction).Since then, I have designed and taught many advanced undergraduate courses at the University of Arizona from the ground up, but my teaching abilities are strong in a one-on-one setting. Primarily that's because I really like people. A lot. I see things from the student's point of view, and that helps me to tutor in a way that is individualized for each student. As a high school and middle school substitute teacher and as an instructor at the North Carolina Governor's School I found that I enjoy teaching students at all levels, from middle school through advanced undergraduate.I tutor many subjects, most especially essay writing and editing, grammar and mechanics, reading comprehension and critical thinking, public speaking, Spanish language, study skills and organization, and U.S. history and politics. The courses I have designed and taught at the University of Arizona have been cross-listed in economics, mathematics, psychology, political science, law, and family studies and human development. When I'm not tutoring, I enjoy learning old time and bluegrass fiddle tunes by ear and playing them on the street incognito, juggling (torches and knives, large numbers of objects), and composing electronic music.
