Online 8th Grade Reading Tutoring review by Tyrrell
At our meeting yesterday, the student and I read an Amy Tan story titled "Two Kinds." We took turns reading paragraphs, and after we had gotten through all the text, we talked about its form and content. We identified the protagonist and antagonist of the story and discussed its conflicts, symbols, and themes. We then moved on to Alice Walker's "Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self," which is a non-fictional essay that bears some resemblance to Tan's piece. She seems to be increasingly engaged with the material.

The student and I went over his notes for the book he's currently reading "The Outsiders". We discussed all the chapters he has read and used literary analysis to identify some of the themes occurring in the book. When he and I first met, we talked about how it is important to make notes when reading any material for school and he agreed to try this. The notes we used were the ones his teacher gave him that he had added on to during his own reading of the book. We also discussed his other classes. We talked about what homework to expect in the coming week from his other classes.

I worked with the first student for one hour and then I worked with the second student for one hour. With both of them I assessed them to determine what reading level they are on and whether or not they are below, on, or above their grade level in reading. I am working with both of them on their required summer reading. I will be incorporating various writing activities with the reading.

We are focusing on grammar for our Monday sessions. This session we specifically covered comma rules. We went through each of the five main rules with for comma usage and made flash with examples of the rules that we created. I left the student with two practice sheets that focuses on appositives, restrictive, and non-restrictive phrases. Next session, we plan to continue working on comma usage and correcting passages.

The student's face lit up as he was telling me about the story. I gave him an assignment to write a 3 page essay about what he feels Utopia would be.

The student and I worked on analyzing the book he is currently reading. Specifically, we worked on taking notes during reading and actively asking questions to get the most out of each chapter.
