I taught English and creative writing for several years during my graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including first-year English writing courses. I am passionate about helping students of all ages improve their writing skills. I love leading students through the writing process to produce great papers and college application essays, as well as study for AP and SAT exams. I can also help with personal statements for graduate school applications, including the creative writing MFA.Awards and Fellowships at UW-Madison:Campus-wide Teaching Assistant award for Innovation in Teaching, an award given to 15 grad students out of 2200 TAsUniversity Housing teaching award, a student-nominated honorDavid Maraniss Fellow at the School of Journalism and Mass CommunicationHoffman-Halls Emerging Artist Fellow at the Wisconsin Institute for Creative WritingIn addition to my experience in academia, MFA in creative writing, and MA in journalism, I have over a decade of experience as a magazine writer and editor. Tutoring mirrors publishing, in that they're both collaborative efforts to train stronger writers to write refined prose. Great progress can be made this way.I teach writing as a process by encouraging students to embrace drafting. We take time to understand the project, brainstorm, follow idea threads, and write first drafts. Then the feedback and revision process begins, which leads to a final, polished piece. I can help at any point on this timeline.I'm excited to help both high school and college students with academic work and test prep, and I can also give you feedback one-on-one with your fiction or poetry project. Please contact me to learn more and schedule lessons."[Emily] is always positive and always has wonderful constructive criticism for my essays. She makes me feel as though she takes time to learn my writing style and genuinely cares about my success in the class. This class has made me enjoy English after hating it for all of high school." --UW-Madison student evaluation

I received an undergraduate degree in Psychology with a focus in Neuroscience from Hunter College in Manhattan, New York. After college I went to medical school and received an MD from SUNY Upstate in New York. My favorite subjects to tutor are neuroscience, neurophysiology (I love the brain!), biology, and anything biology related. I worked as a Teaching Assistant in college, and also served as a teaching assistant during medical school, as well as taught medical students during residency. My teaching philosophy is really to identify each individual student's learning style and try to tailor my approach to that. Everyone learns differently, so I think it's best to avoid a one size fits all approach. I have been a student for most of my life! So I have had a lot of exposure to teachers and tutors with different styles and remembered what I liked about them, what worked, and what didn't. I think the best tutors and teachers that I have had were able to communicate clearly, adapt to their students and adjust their styles, and also had a passion for their subject that was infectious. I only tutor subjects that I love. Because if I'm bored by an area or not enthusiastic, how can I expect my students to be?Outside of academics, I like to watch movies (especially sci/fi fantasy), play video games, read, walk my dog, and travel.

I was volunteered in high school to tutor math on my lunch breaks by my precalculus teacher. The students that I tutored told me that I explained math better than their teachers and it was a great feeling.I pursued my degree in Secondary Mathematics and taught Junior High School math when I was certified. While pursuing my degree in teaching students with learning disabilities, I co-taught the first grade at a Montessori school. Currently I work for a private company that pushes me into title one schools in Harlem to help them with HIgh School Math courses to prep for the common core exams. I also work for publicly funded programs as a third grade teacher.Teaching is the most rewarding profession become my students' success becomes a part of my own success story.

I taught AP & IB Physics for six years in the late 90's, with exceptional success for my students on all AP and IB exams. I've also taught regular physics (as opposed to college prep). And I taught Algebra 1 through Calculus in rural Louisiana through the Teach For America program before I got licensed to teach physics. These and other teaching jobs involved quite a bit of one-on-one work with students.Even though I was known for guiding my students to good results on the AP and IB physics tests, that wasn't what mattered most to me. I wanted to share my excitement and love for math and physics. The most important results for me were seeing students get excited about physics, and start doing their own exploring. Test scores come and go, but attitude and enthusiasm are forever.

Frequently Asked Questions
By 12th grade, Spanish students typically struggle with advanced verb tenses (subjunctive, conditional perfect), nuanced grammar rules, and maintaining conversational fluency under pressure. Many also face challenges with cultural context—understanding idiomatic expressions and regional variations that don't translate directly. Additionally, students preparing for AP Spanish or final exams often feel anxious about speaking naturally without mentally translating from English, which can slow down their responses and reduce confidence.
In a typical classroom, 12th graders speak Spanish for only a few minutes per class. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring flips this—you spend the entire session speaking, listening, and getting real-time feedback on pronunciation and grammar. Tutors can target your specific accent issues, correct speaking habits immediately, and have genuine conversations tailored to your interests and level. This consistent, pressure-free speaking practice builds fluency and confidence far faster than classroom discussion ever can.
Mastery comes from understanding patterns rather than memorizing lists. A great tutor helps you see how regular and irregular verbs follow logic—once you understand why the subjunctive exists and when to use it, conjugating becomes intuitive. The key is practice in context: using verbs in real sentences and conversations, not drilling isolated conjugation charts. Spaced repetition—reviewing challenging tenses across multiple sessions—helps cement these patterns into long-term memory.
12th graders often know vocabulary but can't retrieve it quickly during conversations or exams. The solution is active retrieval practice—using new words in sentences, speaking them aloud, and encountering them in different contexts. Tutors can create personalized word lists tied to topics you care about, then use them in conversations and writing exercises. This beats passive flashcard study because your brain forms stronger connections when words are meaningful and used authentically.
Look for a tutor with expertise in your specific needs—whether that's AP Spanish exam preparation, conversational fluency, or grammar mastery. They should be a native speaker or near-native with experience teaching advanced grammar and cultural nuance. Equally important: they should make you feel comfortable speaking without fear of judgment, ask engaging questions to keep conversations natural, and adjust their teaching based on what's working for you. The best tutors are enthusiastic about Spanish culture and can explain the 'why' behind grammar rules, not just the rules themselves.
Language and culture are inseparable. Understanding why certain expressions exist, what they mean in different Spanish-speaking countries, and how native speakers actually use them makes learning stick. A tutor can introduce you to authentic materials—films, news articles, podcasts, literature—that show how language works in real life, not just textbooks. This context transforms Spanish from a subject you're studying into a living tool for connecting with millions of people across the world.
By 12th grade, most students have foundational skills and are working toward advanced conversational ability. With consistent personalized tutoring—typically 1-2 sessions per week for several months—you can move from classroom Spanish to comfortable, natural conversation. The timeline depends on your starting level and how much you practice outside tutoring, but targeted instruction accelerates progress significantly. Consistent practice, active speaking, and real-world application are what transform knowledge into genuine fluency.
