Learning and intellectual growth in students has its fundamentals, as does soccer. Students build from basic comfort to a feeling of being invited, then to a knowledge that they are inspired, as well as an increasing confidence in their own voice as it is elicited in various ways. Subtly they sense the growing realization that they are part of a larger whole???of the human story, of life.I believe in a balance of progressive and traditional teaching. Tutoring one-on-one is the best of teaching. I like to present any given material in two ways, such as aurally and visually, so that various learners can access the depth of the content. An example might be to have them select quotations from Civil Disobedience, put them in their own words, write whether they agree with them or not and create a visual of a selected passage from Walden. Or in addition to an aural discussion of a Scene in Hamlet I will write a web on the board to map both concepts and characters.I believe in growth through learning. I believe it is life in a full sense.

Originally from New York City, I graduated magna cum laude from the University of London (Queen Mary College) in England with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Drama. My primary concentrations, also the subjects of my dissertations, were religious themes and portrayals in Early Modern and Renaissance literature, particularly Shakespeare, as well as the political and socioeconomic impact of language and creative arts education in the 21st century. I have completed graduate level coursework at Reed College, the University of Texas at Austin, and Johns Hopkins. I have four years of classroom teaching experience alongside a decade spent one-on-one tutoring.

Despite that, I graduated from high school with flying colors, went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UCSB, a master’s degree from SDSU and a law degree from CWSL.I have taught younger people in the Santa Barbara region for many years in a program called, Academic Chess, and turned some of my students into very high ranking players for their age brackets. I currently work for an afterschool enrichment program (Best Brains) tutoring elementary English and math, and I have 4+ years of experience as a private ESL tutor for both children and adults. I am working toward my Masters of Science in Secondary English Education and ESL at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. I graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Arts in Comparative World Literature and Japanese, and from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a Master of Arts in Japanese Language and Literature. I began tutoring while I was in high school, assisting with algebra homework. In college, I volunteered as a kindergarten reading assistant through a program called Start Making a Reader Today. I later volunteered while in graduate school at a local high school tutoring students in beginner Japanese. I have also been employed by the University of Wisconsin as a Teaching Assistant, and taught in Religious Studies and East Asian Studies. In all cases, it has been a pleasure watching students progress in their academics and to see them grow as young scholars. I especially enjoy teaching language arts because of the feeling of connection that language can bring. My favorite part of teaching is seeing the smiling face of someone the moment that they finally "get" something they've been struggling with and watching their confidence boost. I am a junior attending Lafayette College, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience on a pre-med track. After college, I hope to earn degrees to practice pediatric neurology or psychiatry and educate our communities about the importance of physical and mental health. I have experience working with several students of diverse ages and abilities, from assisting elementary students in reading comprehension, to tutoring college students in psychology and neuroscience. I also have experience in working with the Special Needs community during the Extended School Year program and working one-on-one with children with varying abilities, allowing me to learn the importance of different teaching and communication techniques. I believe that every person has the fantastic capability to grow as a student, regardless of learning style or background. As a tutor, I'd like to provide an environment to foster this potential for growth and guide my students to become independent learners and develop the critical thinking skills that are so important in today's world.
