Hi! My name is Courtney Dobson. I am very excited for the opportunity to tutor students. I have ten years’ experience in academia. I hold a PhD and Master’s degree from a top British University and I have lectured at the undergraduate level in both Buffalo, NY and the UK. I am equally passionate and meticulous about writing and I have experience editing college papers in the social sciences. As a lecturer, I understand both the challenges and expectations for students to produce good quality work. I have a calm and patient demeanor and I aim for students to become independent thinkers by providing an opportunity for them to articulate and conceptualize their ideas effectively in writing, while challenging them to consider alternative perspectives and to think critically about key arguments. While I was earning my bachelor's degree in Professional Writing at the University of Northwestern St. Paul, I tutored students in the English department. I really like reading and writing (it's most of what I do in and out of work) and I enjoy making myself useful by sharing my knowledge with other students. I also enjoy the process and experience of learning, and I like helping others with that process. I tutor English and writing, I help students prepare for tests, and I help with editing and proofreading. My favorite part is editing, because I've gotten pretty good at catching the little things that can trip a writer up and I like helping others learn.

I have a passion working with young children and helping them realize their potentials. Volunteering in my kids’ school confirmed my beliefs that every child is capable. They only need to be inspired and provided with applicable methods to succeed in academic fields. I've previously interned at a literary agency, where I read manuscripts all day and wrote reader's reports, and spent my pre-COVID post-graduate time working as a live sound engineer at a number of music venues around New York City.I'm very passionate about writing, literature, and music -- I love teaching these subjects, and helping students identify with their work in a way that develops personal investment. These areas have proved (and still are) completely foundational to coming into my personhood, and I'm deeply invested in evoking the same in my students.

While attending school, I worked with graduate and undergraduate students on their college writing assignments.
