The student and I continued to discuss and review homework covering the conics section. We focused on the homework covering hyperbolas, how to graph them, how to find the focus/vertex, and the asymptotes. He left with a good grasp of the way to set up the information to graph hyperbolas.

We worked on arithmetic and geometric sequences and series. We converted sequences/series into summation notation and calculated sums for both types of series. The student struggled most with trying to convert the series into summation notation, but seemed to be getting a better handle on it as we went on.

For this session, the student completed a writing assignment, and a comma worksheet. After that, we discussed that he needs to improve his spelling. I quizzed him on a spelling set, and then gave him the assignment to learn the words over the next week. After that, I gave him a few book suggestions, so that he can be reading in his own time and improving his vocabulary.

We reviewed the definition of a derivative, proofs of the power, quotient and product rules, derivatives of trig functions, and computing derivatives. She is making remarkable progress and is grasping very complicated material quite quickly; faster even than she realizes.

For the 30 min of this session the student provided me with information to help me with another student who is taking a class in IRT. The rest of the meeting, we worked on her SAS programming for the changes she is making in her dissertation. This is a very involved process.

I worked with the Student 1 on reviewing for an upcoming test. She has a complete grasp of what they have been doing in algebra so far, and I expect she will do very well on her test. Student 2 and I discussed his recent homework. He can solve problems once all the given information is 'put together' for him, but has trouble putting it together himself. I saw something similar earlier in the semester, and he eventually got past it. I expect the same thing to happen again this time around. I encouraged him to make a study sheet to help him memorize the theorems in his book; I suspect this will do more than anything else to get him comfortable with proofs.
