I am a graduate of Spelman College. I received my Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with a minor in Public Health. Since graduation, I've worked as both an after-school tutor and an in-classroom teacher, working with students in grades 6-12. While I tutor many different STEM-based subjects, I am most passionate about Mathematics. In my experience, math tends to be a subject that many students shy away from, and as an educator, my goal is to develop an appreciation for the subject by creating diverse learning tactics to ensure that all students are progressing. In my spare time, I enjoy yoga, gardening, and spending time with my two cats.

My name is Shakira Hightower. I have been an educator for over 20 years. I strongly believe in the potency of education. Not only is education a means to provide a tool kit for a career, it is a tool that can be used to create structures for understanding, improving, and adding to the world and it's paradigms. I hope that through my work as an education professional, I have inspired students to become thinkers and architects of solutions systems.

No toy was safe in my hands. As a child, I always took my toys apart to see their inner components and how they produced sound or light. Most survived the reassembly stage, while others were mourned by my mother's pocketbook. When I was in the fifth grade, my mother gave me my first toolkit. To say the least, I took apart everything in the house that could be disassembled with a screwdriver. Along with deconstructing anything that gained my interest, I also enjoyed crafting things.I associate these childhood curiosities with my current interests as I find myself wondering how natural phenomena occur and daydreaming about inventions. Studying the interactions between humans and technology have been in my interests for most of my high school and college career. My short-term goal is to explore different focuses so that I can develop an understanding of my personal interests in the field of physics. My long-term goal is to use my passion for sharing knowledge as an educator and to help others find what peaks their curiosities.

What's My Problem Have you ever asked yourself this question? If so, you're not alone! Many of us at some point have struggled in academic areas that seem impossible to master- I know, because I've been that student once. For this reason, I am motivated to teach and tutor students who struggle with the confidence of mastering their toughest subjects! With a Bachelors in Biology from Spelman College and a Masters in Medical Science from Indiana University School of Medicine, I know what it is like to spend countless hours studying and dissecting material, especially in the Biological Sciences! So, I have committed to doing it all over again... For you! I love teaching the Biological Sciences because it explains a lot of what happens on Earth, and even why we behave the way we do as humans. I love to incorporate exciting things such as animal models, YouTube videos and even dance moves-because I'm a dancer- into my lessons, to assist in understanding concepts. I've even traveled to Spanish speaking countries to understand the Latin culture and language to compliment my goal of becoming a bilingual physician. I believe that the best teacher is the best student, and because of that, I will forever position myself to learn.
