I enjoy helping students dramatically improve their performance in mathematics. Algebra and Geometry are my favorite subjects to tutor, but I am able to tutor anything up to Trigonometry. I am talented at utilizing unique teaching strategies and tools to engage students effectively, and foster a fun and fascinating learning environments. I am exceptionally patient and encouraging, while providing individualized and extracurricular support for students that are struggling with learning concepts and mathematical topics.

My passion for education has been evident my entire life - one doesn't earn three post-graduate degrees without loving learning! But that passion extends to teaching, too, and I love being able to share my education and understanding with others. I am a graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, earning a bachelors degree in Communication Studies. I continued in that subject matter at the University of Iowa, where I earned a Master's degree and Ph.D. in Communication Studies, with emphasis in rhetoric, interpersonal communication, and persuasion. I also earned a J.D. at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, and am a member of the Minnesota bar. I have been teaching and tutoring for over 15 years. I have tutored in small group and individual settings for students taking the LSAT, GRE and Bar exams. Additionally, I have significant experience teaching college classes, including communication theory, public speaking, interpersonal communication, and research methods. Particularly in cases of test prep (but also as a general guideline), I like to focus on a student's strengths, not weaknesses. I evaluate to see what kind of thinking a student employs and teach them how to identify and answer those questions. Then we look for ways to use those strengths to address other questions and build up expertise from that. I have found that this helps students feel confident about their own intelligence, able to improve in challenging areas, and create a long-term learning strategy.
I have been in education for over 25 years as a teacher and administrator. I enjoy helping students with their academics through their educational journey. I believe that every student has their own learning style and will use various strategies in assisting them meet their educational goals.
I work in healthcare industry and am passionate about learning new cultures and languages. I truly believe that in order to learn a new language, we need to understand historical contexts and cultural characteristics of the country along with the language. I am proud of my Korean culture and I would love to teach you not only Korean language, but Korean history and culture altogether. Let's have a chat!
I am a graduate of the University of Iowa, where I received my Master of Fine Arts in English-Creative Writing from the Writers' Workshop, and New York University, where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dramatic Writing. I minored in Creative Writing. As a graduate student, I taught Creative Writing, and after graduating I worked as a Writing Consultant for undergraduates at the Tippie College of Business. I am most passionate about English Literature and Composition, but I also tutor Essay Writing/Editing in addition to elementary and middle school reading, writing, and math. My tutoring approach is tailored to the needs of each particular studentI believe that is the most effective way for the student to improve. And a strong foundation in language comprehension is a stepping stone to greater understanding of concepts both academic and practical. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and writing fiction and poetry, and the occasional internet or magazine article. I also really enjoy working to solve the New York Times Crossword and viewing art in galleries or museums.
With more than two years of worth of teaching at the college level and a Master's of Science degree in mathematics, I have taught and supported students in various subjects of mathematics, ranging from Statistics and Probability; Calculus I, II, and III; trigonometry and precalculus, and other subjects. Furthermore, I have taught as an independent contractor for different firms for the last seven years. Tutoring can be an entertaining challenge; in particular, the amount of creativity used to explain concepts to students with various unorthdox methods of learning leaves room for them to enjoy the experience learning the concept first-hand and learn about themselves a bit in the process. For me, the objective is for the student to become genuinely interested in a subject, especially as tough as mathematics, after having that 'a-ha!" moment of everything suddenly making sense. That is one of the major objectives I attempt to achieve. It's unusual how far I will go to help a student learn in a personalized environment designed for them. As I come across videos of mathematics from various youtubers and websites, the more I've learned students learn best in an setting uniquely built for them. This could be working with students who are used to counting in base 12 (who knew you could keep track of numbers by knuckles spaces between the inner side of your fingers!), multiply by counting vertices in the Latin print of numerals involved, or simply those who have never had someone to help foster their growth in their skills in mathematics! After a few sessions, students start to see how fast they are capturing the material and how much of it starts to make sense for them in real-time; this is especially prevalent once we diagnose where the student is having problems day one and start chipping away until a complete picture is built for the student to grasp. If the student puts in the effort, they deserve the best tutoring service that I offer. If you're interested in someone who will do whatever they can to attend to your needs, don't hesitate to contact me.

I'm a recent PhD graduate in Bioengineering in the Boston area. My thesis involved nanoparticles and bacterial infections, but as a biomedical engineer I've had training in circuits, mechanics, some programming, chemistry and biology. Tutoring for me is a collaborative effort, following a problem-based learning with questions that will lead the student towards the answer they're looking for while providing a well-rounded understanding of why and how that answer works.
I am a recent graduate of the University of Iowa, where I earned my BA in History and a Certificate in Museum Studies. It was there that I specialized in American History and African/World History. I am planning on returning to school to obtain my MA in History, or an African Studies related field. My past tutoring experiences have included tutoring traditional and non-traditional students in History related classes. With these students I worked on writing skills, overall understanding of topics, test studying skills, and comprehending various themes throughout history. I worked with students with learning and mental disabilities. I tutor a variety of subjects, but my favorite subjects to tutor are History and Geography. I find these two subjects fascinating and truly have a passion for them and showing how interesting history and geography can be! My teaching philosophy starts with making students feel comfortable and at ease. Learning should be enjoyable and not an added stressor if it can be avoided. Education is such an important part to life, and its importance should never be underestimated. I pay attention to my students to understand their needs and what they desire to get out of their learning experiences, then adapt my teaching and tutoring style to what will be most beneficial to them. Outside of tutoring, I am interested in sports, dogs, and the world! I love to travel and meet all different types of people. I spent a summer in Scotland and Ireland and have officially caught the travelers bug and I cannot wait to see what else the world has to offer. I am also an avid football, baseball and basketball fan.
I have a B.A. in English Language and Literature, and in Cinema and Media Studies from The University of Chicago, and an M.A. in Film Studies from The University of Iowa, where I also spent two years as a T.A., teaching undergraduate courses in film studies and related fields. I firmly believe that self-confidence, far more than ambition or natural aptitude, is the greatest determinant of success in an academic setting. By "confidence" I mean not only confidence in ones mastery of topical material, but, more fundamentally, confidence in ones ability to learn and think independently. As an instructor, I am dedicated to helping students succeed because I know from my own experiences as a student that, at every level of education, from elementary to graduate school, the support and encouragement of a passionate teacher can turn a diffident or apathetic underachieving student into a classroom star.My favorite subject to tutor is standardized test prep (SAT, ACT, GRE, etc.) because such tests cover a finite body of material that can be taught and mastered. In addition to test prep, I also tutor a number of English related subjects (including Writing, Literature, Essay Editing, and Grammar), and offer help with Study Skills and Organization. In my free time, I enjoy reading, music, travel, and photography.
