I love math, coding, and science, and I want to share that with my students! I am sad to see students who think they can't master these subjects because they've never had the right help and support to learn. I always try a number of different approaches and explanations to see what works for a student. Some people like formulas, while others like pictures. I work for that moment when a difficult concept finally makes sense.

I graduated from the University of Arizona with 2 degrees. One in business and Public Administration. During my undergraduate degree, I had 1 and a half years of civil engineering. I also have a masters degree in Counseling and Guidance with an emphasis in agency administration. My first job after graduating was to work with individuals who could not keep a steady job. I developed the program, did the financial accounting and carried out the program. I had the best recidivism rate across the whole united states compared to other similar manpower programs. I had to teach adults simple tasks such as how to read and use a tape measure. figure out sq. ft. on a job plan, and then figure material needs. Worked with nurse aides understanding the process to convert ml's to ounces etc. They were taught at the job site, but were confused and could not remember how to figure math out. It was important for me to help them find ways to remember. My patience and ability to simplify instructions, and go slowly with all these workers and understand their different ways of learning was important for them to learn. each person has a different way of learning. My counseling background and engineering studies helped to work with different people's learning methods. I am very versatile. I had my own income tax business, Counseling practice, and training practice. I ran my own Construction business for over 30 years. I coached children from ages 7 to 17 in baseball, basketball, volleyball, and soccer. To keep children on my teams, I helped them with math and other subjects so they could keep up their grades in school and be able to play on my teams. Not only were they successful in school, but in basketball we won league championships. I played everyone on my team a fair amount of time in the games. Other coaches played the best kids most of the game time. I even had girls on my team and they played as much time as the boys. Parents would ask to have children play on my team. My soccer team for age 8 and 9, won the Pima cup for their age our first year in soccer. I love working with children and they not only learn their sport, but they are taught lessons in life.

I am a graduate of Willamette University, where I earned my BA in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics. Currently, I am preparing for the Actuarial Science certification exams by taking classes at Arizona State University. I tutored students from a variety of academic backgrounds at my previous university, primarily in quantitative methods like Applied Statistics. Although Statistics is my favorite subject to tutor, I also very much enjoy other math topics like Calculus and Algebra, as well as writing and Psychology. I take a foundational approach to tutoring by focusing on the individual building blocks of a topic; I identify which of those building blocks a student is comfortable with and which we should work on together. Once those building blocks are established, we can more easily transition into the next levels of the topic. Most importantly, I work with a student to create a plan tailored to their individual learning style and needs. When I am not studying or tutoring, I like to spend my time reading, hiking, exploring the sights in Arizona, traveling, and visiting my family back home in the Pacific Northwest!

One of my students wrote, "Deanna has helped me throughout my entire student career. We have had a lot of talks about achieving my dreams to become a nurse. She is very easy to talk to and when I think things are totally impossible she helps me to see how things can work out. And things did work out: I graduated from the LPN program on May 11th of this year. I owe a large part of that to her for helping me along the way; what an awesome person she is! I believe anyone that has a problem with school or otherwise would benefit from talking to her. She helps you see that the impossible is possible."Reading these kind words is humbling and inspiring. Tutoring is an enormous responsibility as well as an honor. Learning is a two-way street. I learn as much from listening to my students and helping them find their own paths to success as they gain from my experience and passion for teaching. My qualifications include:EDUCATION & CERTIFICATIONS2012 - A.A.S.
