I am a college instructor with ten years experience in the classroom as a teacher and tutor. Originally from South Carolina, I went to school in Pennsylvania and currently live in Alabama. I believe that students learn best through practice and approaching learning through a relaxed lens, thinking about the larger, structural questions behind their concerns in order to gain a broader and more inclusive understanding of the subject matter. My tutoring philosophy stems from the belief that students and tutors are peers, and that collaboration is the best means for students to learn, not just reciting or memorizing what I might suggest. I am a graduate of the University of Chicago, and I will be starting a graduate program at Columbia in August. I am about to complete a year of service with City Year, an education non-profit that places young adults into under-served schools. As a City Year member, I worked full-time in the classroom with middle-school students who were in approximately the 10th percentile for math (meaning they score lower than 90% of students). One-fourth of those students were able to grow around 15 percentile points by the end of the year! Hobbies: reading, cooking, gardening, music, art, nature, books, writing

I am a graduate of the MA Fashion Studies program at Parsons The New School for Design in New York, having previously studied linguistics and foreign languages (concentrating in Russian and French) at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and at McGill University in Montreal. I currently serve as adjunct faculty in the Art and Design History and Theory department at Parsons, where I specialize in courses which combine numerous disciplines within the humanities, such as a course about the relationship between fashion and language and a graduate seminar about writing for fashion publications. I have also led elementary summer art camp workshops in my hometown of Los Alamos, New Mexico. My teaching methods, which are interactive, engaging, and tailored to a range of learning styles, have consistently been described by my students as motivational and encouraging. I tutor a wide range of subjects, from Middle School Math to PSAT and SAT test preparation, but I am most passionate about Critical Reading and Writing and Essay Editing. These are areas in which my students make remarkable progress in short periods of time and also find great pleasure in relating the themes of their writing to their own outside interests and passions. I also enjoy helping students prepare to take standardized tests by addressing, in an understanding and accommodating way, the common anxieties and stresses that can accompany test-taking. Outside of school and tutoring, I enjoy traveling, reading, visiting museums, cooking, and snowboarding.

I am extremely passionate about tutoring, and I have several years of experience tutoring students in my high school's learning center in various subjects as well as tutoring private clients in Standardized Test preparation. Given that I graduated high school recently, I have taken several Standardized Tests and high school subjects myself, so I have a comprehensive understanding of not only how to tutor these subjects and exams, but also what it is like to take them. While I have a wide range of interests and am able to tutor various subjects, I am most passionate about tutoring in Standardized Test preparation (including ACT, SAT, SAT Subject Tests, and AP Exams), Biology, Chemistry, Math, and Spanish. I truly believe that students should have the opportunity to learn in the way that works best for them, and I love being able to help them succeed by creating a comfortable tutoring environment in which we can best assess their particular needs and use strategies specific to them. My passion for learning drives everything that I do, and tutoring is the platform that I use to try to spread that passion to others. I am a recent college graduate currently pursuing a career in publishing in New York City. My interest in tutoring and the publishing industry stem from the same source: I want to help instill in others the same love of learning I have felt throughout my life. Whether it's getting lost in a good book or feeling the thrill of excitement at finally solving a difficult math problem, I feel that learning should be fun and viewed as a challenge, not a chore. Throughout my academic career, I have been a well-rounded student, excelling in math as well as language and literature. I am a notoriously good test-taker, a skill developed from solid study habits that I hope to pass on to future students. For me, tutoring is my way of giving back to my community and paying forward the help I've gotten from teachers, mentors, and fellow students throughout my life.

From running a piano program at a nonprofit children's theatre to private tutoring in math, science, and standardized test prep, I enjoy helping my students become confident and self-sufficient learners!
