SSAT Tutoring review by Nora in Chino, CA
In this session, the student and I finished our work on the Reading test and began discussing methods for conceiving and structuring her essay arguments in the Writing test. With respect to the Reading section, we practiced a new approach to dense, science-based non-fiction passages in which she found the jargon challenging: we started as usual by reading the questions first and underlining key phrases or line numbers in them, but instead of reading the entire passage before coming back to the questions, we tried skimming the passage until we came to a statement or phrase that we had seen in a question, answering that question, and returning to the point where we had left off skimming the passage. Although it took a little practice for this technique to feel comfortable, she expressed that she found it helpful in maintaining her focus and minimizing distractions and anxiety in the denser, more technical passages. Next, we turned our attention to the essay. The student felt confident in her ability to demonstrate mastery of grammar, usage and mechanics; however, the prospect of determining her point of view, coming up with supporting arguments and details, and structuring her writing in a very short time frame concerned her. We used the scoring criteria to guide our development of a process by which she can formulate her thesis and arguments and ensure that her essay anticipates and responds to counter-arguments as well as acknowledging the limitations or complexities of the stance she adopts. In addition, we analyzed some sample essays for their strengths and weaknesses with respect to argumentation and logic, structure, and the use of concrete supporting details. I have asked her to choose two sample writing prompts and to plan her stance and arguments for each one using the questions we discussed; in our next session, we'll use these outlines to explore the development of her arguments and the maintenance of a smooth progression between her ideas.
