My favorite math topic is algebra, particularly because of its usefulness in solving real-world word problems. The job of a teacher or tutor involves the consideration of many different factors and variables when working with students. It is not as simple as passing on information about a subject or topic. As instructors, we must not only inform, but also explain, clarify, backtrack, bring in outside examples, and respond to challenging questions. We must comfort and relax our students, and help them develop tools for success. We know that our job is challenging, because if our job were easy, then our students wouldn't need us.I feel that it takes someone who is cognizant of all of these things in order to be a truly effective educator. During my 8+ years as a high school chemistry teacher and tutor, I have developed the experience and the skills in order to help students with challenging subjects, and not only to improve their grades, but to improve their understanding and confidence with which they approach their classes. I'm a New York transplant to LA, and a freelance composer and musician by nature. I am an artist and a teacher-- these are my two passions! I'm also a translator, linguistics nerd, avid reader, and fabulous teacher. I went to NYU and studied Linguistics, and am continuing my studies for an Applied Linguistics Masters here in California.I have been teaching and tutoring for many years, since I started college. I've done private SAT Prep tutoring both here and in New York, as well as prep for other standardized tests such as the ISEE, SSAT, and HSPT. I also teach a bi-weekly SAT Prep course in Glendale, and an advanced Competition Math class for two age groups (6-8 and 9-12). It's a lot of fun! I also was the Tutoring Head of the Science National Honor Society in high school and spent every week tutoring high school level biology and chemistry. I spent one summer working at Kumon tutoring children in basic math and reading. In college, I spent two years tutoring adults to pass their GED. I was also an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant (UTA) for a development and physiology biology class, as well as a Peer Tutor for other intro level biology classes.
