This session was focused on building the student's background in types of compounds so that she is better able to understand why she is learning to name compounds. In class, she is learning how to name ionic compounds, polyatomic ions, and will soon learn to name covalent compounds. We covered the basics of ionic compounds and covalent compounds and, in doing so, practiced utilizing multiple resources of different complexities to gain more complete understandings of novel concepts. She complete these definitions mostly on her own, with some guidance by me. This is a good thing, as we move toward her being able to complete such a task on her own without any prompting or help. I left her with the assignment of defining metallic compounds in the same fashion we defined covalent and ionic ones. I also told her that I expect her to complete her homework in the manner we have practiced, writing the question before starting, stopping if she feels lost to create a set of notes that fill in the gaps she is missing before continuing, and working with the goal of completely understanding an item before writing an answer.

Science Tutoring review by Max in Northlake, IL
Today we spent our session working through an extra credit assignment for the student's AP Chemistry class. The assignment concerned determining the 4 transitions of energy levels within the hydrogen atom's electron orbitals that result in visible emission spectra. To do this, she calculated the energy of each energy level transition using the Bohr model, and then calculating the corresponding frequency and wavelength using the Planck-Einstein relation. We then tested her understanding of the electromagnetic spectrum by determining which wavelengths were in the visible range. After finding the first two, we found a pattern and quickly deduced the remaining two. With a few minutes to spare after completing the assignment, I made sure that she was comfortable and had a grasp on the most recent topics covered in her class, which were absorbance and Beer's Law (in lab) and standard enthalpy of formation, both of which she seemed confident in. Her most recent exam score of 89 shows some promising improvement, and hopefully we can get that even higher on the next one.
