How can a Reading tutor help you?

Reading is one of the most important skills that anyone can develop. A person's ability to read could help them find sources for news, enjoy personal correspondence, and, of course, find a great career. Children begin learning to read in kindergarten, with the help of phonics training, such as phonological awareness, and learning about homophones and homographs. Later, reading comprehension continues to be important for all classes and standardized tests like the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS). Even college entrance tests like the SAT, ACT, and GRE have a required reading comprehension section, so schools can see how proficient potential students are in this area. You want your child to do well throughout their lives, and that means being able to read well. But how can you help them improve? A personal reading tutor in Medford, MA, will be able to cater sessions to your child's preferences in a way that they won't get in a traditional classroom setting.

Varsity Tutors will match your child with a reading tutor in Medford who will motivate them to reach beyond their goals in reading. Our educational directors will learn about your child's needs and skills when you contact us, so we could help you find an independent, professional reading tutor who has experience teaching students just like your child. From young elementary school students, all the way through high school, we could help you find a professional reading tutor who might help improve your child's grades and test scores. Using entertaining supplemental material and engaging study tools, a professional tutor can try to help your child improve their fluency in language, help them understand a story's main idea and characters, and help them summarize what they have read.

Session Summaries by Reading Tutors

Reading Tutoring review by Danielle in Medford, MA
We mostly discussed letter comprehension and reading. The student and I will discuss letter association during the next session. I have encouraged the student to read as much as she can outside of our sessions.

Reading Tutoring review by Morganne in Medford, MA
One student worked on reading and writing. He is really getting better at being willing to sound out words in both writing and reading that he doesn't know. Will work more with him on that moving forward to strengthen those ideas for next year. Discussed another student's writing, as she seemed to enjoy creating a story. Also spent 30 minutes with her discussing vocab and word recognition. She is getting better at reviewing what happens in the story from memory recall.

Reading Tutoring review by Cindy in Medford, MA
The student wanted to go over her recent English Language test. Several of the problems did not receive high marks. We went back over, and re-read each of the texts, and re-did the corresponding short answer responses. I encouraged her to make short, bullet-ed notes on scrap paper when searching for textual evidence for her responses. She knows all the steps she has learned in class, very well. She needs more English Language practice but has well formed work and study habits. One of the questions she got wrong, gave her trouble because she did not know what a dandelion was. After looking up dandelion she was able to correct it. We also worked on Math perimeter and area problems on rectangles and squares. She did very well.

Today, the student and I met at the library. We read a long book about leeches, played hangman, and worked on his high-frequency words. All in all a great lesson!

Reading Tutoring review by Adam in Medford, MA
The student and I worked on reading through several 2 minute mysteries, which were quite challenging. It was not so much a question of him solving the puzzle as it was if he understood what had happened. He has trouble connecting details in the story together, but he grasped the main ideas well, and he seemed more even more engaged than before; I think he was enjoying himself. I think the key is for this student is to read material that is easy to medium difficulty every day; then continue to work with me on more challenging material twice a week. Practice is key.
