PSAT Tutoring review by Victoria in Northlake, IL
This was a great session. Both students studied vocabulary words by acting them out charades-style. They really had fun with it and showed confidence with the words. We reviewed a few test-taking strategies from my experience (e.g.. starting with the middle answer option in math guess-and-check situations, previewing answer choices to see what you're working towards, guessing the same letter each time from the available choices after obvious wrong options have been eliminated). They seemed satisfied with these explanations, and I think there were some things that were obvious but they just had not thought about before. Student H agreed to bring her review book on Thursday so we can go over more strategies for the test as a whole. I read through the essays each of them had written in the course of the week. Student J's was very strong; I think it would have received around a 10. I talked to her about how to meaningfully vary sentence structure and create clear ties from each topic sentence to the thesis. Her organization was very clear and logical. Student H had tried to write her essay in only ten minutes in a frenzied babysitting environment, so she had some obvious technical errors and undeveloped thoughts; however, her organization and thesis were still clear due to the pre-writing we had done together. I want to review an essay of hers when she has time to really sit and write for 20 minutes in the next two weeks. Last, we worked on a reading section. The girls completed only a few questions and then derived vocabulary words for next week from questions they had been unsure of. Vocabulary is their main barrier right now, so we will continue to focus on vocabulary development in the next few weeks.
