I've been passionate about helping students ever since I was a student myself in middle school and high school. I used to tutor my friends and help them with their homework. After I graduated from high school, I got my bachelor's in Fine Arts from Tufts University and a CTEFL certificate from Boston Academy of English. For the past 5 years, I've been living and working in Laos, where I've had the pleasure of teaching so many incredible students. In my previous job, I taught English in classrooms, tutored individual students, provided online classes, and even helped to developed workshops in subjects like environmental protection, computer basics, and menstrual health. I trained adults to teach English as a second language and get comfortable teaching in front of a class, often for the first time! I have found that teaching English has allowed me to travel the world and make a difference in the lives of so many students, young and old! I hope someday to start my own English center and social enterprise here in Laos with my husband. When I was younger, I always dreamed of being an art teacher. Although it is not as useful a subject in my current location, it is one I'm very passionate about. I love helping students find their own uniqueness and truly begin understanding how their brain works to help them learn in the most effective way.In the beginning of my teaching journey I worked as a substitute teacher in a variety of schools around Queens, NY.The following year, I was a traveling science teacher for grades K-3.I also was a test prep tutor for grades 3-5 to prepare them for their New York State standardized tests.I taught 3rd and 5th grade full time in Queens, NY for 3 years.In the summers and on Saturday mornings I taught ESL to small groups of students in various Chinese schools throughout Queens and tutored struggling students in one on one sessions.After having my own children, I created a baby sign language business where I taught beginner American Sign Language Vocabulary through music and song in mommy and me style class to parents with infants and toddlers. I often recommend that parents teach struggling readers the American Sign Language alphabet because research shows that it helps students enhance their spelling skills.I also taught English to students in China on an online platform.I received my bachelor's degree in general education grades 1-6 with a minor in english and my master's degree in teaching student's with disabilities. Both degrees are from St. John's University. I also have an TESOL certification that I received when I began teaching online.I tutor all subjects in elementary school and I especially enjoy teaching reading, test prep, ESL and math.I believe all students are capable to progress in their learning when a love of learning is present. I love motivating students to do their best by incorporating their interests into our lessons.Currently I am a homeschooling coach. I know what it's like to feel inadequate in the classroom. I grew up in a high-performing school district where many of my peers were able to excel without putting forth any effort. Meanwhile, I was spending countless hours reading, drilling flash cards, and reworking problems without receiving the same results. School just never came naturally for me, and I often felt incompetent, unmotivated and embarrassed to ask for help. Thankfully, I had wonderful teachers, mentors, and tutors along the way that helped me master the strategies and techniques that worked best for my studies and inspired me to love learning. I became increasingly confident throughout the years, eventually earning a spot at my dream college and currently pursuing a career that I'm truly passionate about.I now wish to pay it forward and be a positive influence for the students that are frustrated in school. Based on my own experiences, I recognize how important it is to form a relationship with the student to where they are comfortable with seeking assistance and communicating their feelings and frustrations with me. Once a rapport is established, I'm able to identify the students' disconnects and convey the confusing concept or strategy in a new and understandable way. Hello! I am a high school teacher of Introduction to Biology, Algebra 2 and AP Biology. I have been at my current school for the past two years, and taught at another school for two years before that. At my previous school, I taught Environmental Science and Biology. My first experience as a teacher was right out of college, when I taught summer courses in Biology and Algebra 1. I graduated from Union College in Schenectady, NY, after attending the Loomis Chaffee School in Windsor, CT. Throughout all of my education, I have always been drawn to the sciences, particularly Biology. My major in college was in Biological Sciences, with a concentration in Molecular Biology. Because of the enthusiasm and curiosity that my Microbiology teacher in high school instilled in me, I was inspired to work with students to try and turn on that same interest in science after college. My mother has taught for over 30 years, so it must be in my blood! My passion in the classroom is helping students to realize their true awareness of the natural world around them, and I use labs, visuals, models, and a variety of other methods to help them better understand the complex concepts in science. Many students come into the class thinking that the sciences are very difficult and that one must have a predisposition towards them to succeed, but I enjoy showing them that the sciences, particularly Biology, are very simple and elegant. In my Algebra classes, I try to show students how topics can expand beyond the borders of the classroom, also by using a variety of visuals and models. Sometimes, certain students need more than just good analogies and thorough explanations to help them succeed, and this often requires learning effective organizational and study skills. I frequently work with students outside of the classroom to design better ways to schedule their time, and organize their materials. In my free time, I am an avid fan of exploring St. Louis! This is only my second year living in the Midwest and I have been enjoying discovering new parks and neighborhoods whenever I can find time. I like to travel, as well, and visit friends and family on the East Coast, but I feel as if St. Louis has become my new home.
