Physics Tutoring review by Scott in Markham, IL
He will have his midterm exam late this week, so we spent the time reviewing a copy of last year's midterm that he had acquired. The test will consist in five problems, from which students will choose four to answer. One dealt with Coulomb forces in an equilibrium situation, the next two dealt with different geometries for finding electric field at some point, and the final two questions each dealt with Gauss's law. He had solutions for the last four problems, so I began by working through a solution to the Coulomb's law problem. I emphasized the pieces of information that he would need to know and remember to answer such a question on the test, and I encouraged him to be careful when using algebra to express his final answers. I also pointed out how to answer questions for maximal partial credit, including strategies such as setting up as much of the problem as you can before giving up. We also made a list of the things that he can memorize to avoid having to do more calculus than he has to, such as the volume of a sphere. We were able to discuss solutions to each of the problems, emphasizing conceptual moves at each major step, and he seemed to benefit from seeing the solutions worked out step-by-step. I look forward to seeing how his test goes.

Today I helped the student complete two of her problem sets. We will then be working on memorizing equations.

Physics Tutoring review by Gabriel in Markham, IL
We started out discussing how the student did on her first exam. We started to cover her homework sheet through the problems that they went over in lecture. I then went over the concepts of Newton's First and Second Law, equilibrium, kinetic and static energy, vector vs scalar, velocity vs speed, displacement vs distance traveled, relationship between velocity and acceleration. She had finished her relevant problems from her question set so I did not leave her with any practice. The student seems to have a good grasp on this new content.
