Today the student and I worked on the Writing and Math sections of the SAT. The student struggled only slightly with the material and had a positive attitude throughout the session. I included strategies to simplify the material and convey certain concepts.

Today we worked on the math section using practice test #5. We first went through the entire section 3 (short math section) to emulate the real test. At this point, the student has become very comfortable in the plug and chug questions which is the bulk of the SAT math, but still struggles in questions that require more flexible thinking. It looks like he encounters a question that may look a bit difficult, and kind of gives up before really trying to solve the question. For homework, I have told him he should solve the sections while timing himself as well so that he can really get comfortable even outside of the session about the timing of the SAT. I've assigned him to solve the math sections of practice test #1, due our next math session.

Today, my student and I worked on the Math Non-Calculator, Math Calculator, and Writing/Language Arts sections of the SAT. We started working on the Math Calculator section, since we had started it last week. Since we were working on the higher-numbered problems, she had a bit of a struggle with some of the problems. I was able to work out any problems that she didn't know how to do or got stuck on. The Math Non-Calculator section went similarly, where she had no trouble with the easier problems and hit some obstacles with the higher numbered problems. I again was able to point her in the right direction if she was lost and work out problems as needed. This shows me that we need to focus more on the Math sections in our future sessions, as she did extremely well with the Writing/Language Arts passage we worked through at the end of the session.

She continues to do well with the actual math concepts, but we will keep practicing reading carefully. She also did great on the reading sections today, as well.

Today, she and I worked through no-calculator math problems using an online practice test. Based on her performance on the problems, it is becoming apparent that she has a firm grasp on most of the major concepts covered. Most of her errors and difficulties were rooted in faulty basic operations (i.e., adding negative numbers, dividing fractions, etc.) or missed information in the question stems. To that end, I encouraged her to practice mental math on her own and pay close attention to all of the relevant information in a given question. Towards the end of our session, I promised to provide her with a step-by-step guide for tackling problems involving systems of equations, which she admitted were quite challenging for her.
