We discussed nomenclature, balancing equations and tricks to remember how to classify reactions (combustion, double replacement, etc.) as well as the charges for atoms. We went over two handouts in detail. She must practice and memorize certain compounds to be successful for the next test. I look forward to working with her in more detail soon.

Today we reviewed some for the student's upcoming test. We reviewed electronic configuration - which was probably the most confusing since there are some exceptions that are hard to predict. She seemed to do well with Hess's Law, as well as using the equation Q = mc(Tf-Ti). We talked a lot about exothermic vs. endothermic reactions - these can be pretty confusing when thinking about the physical reaction. It's easier to determine from the delta H value (negative - exo, positive - endo). She also did a few calorimetry problems and some energy/calorie problems as well. Most of these are simply using ratios to determine the energy content of a specific amount of a substance.
