I've always enjoyed school, but there were those times when I was totally lost. I know the feeling of frustration when everyone else seems to get it, or when the whole class is struggling and there's no classmate who can help. In college and in grad school, I've developed superior study skills and the ability break down difficult topics into simpler pieces. When there is a big exam coming up, I've learned how to organize my studying so that I make sure to cover everything but spend the most time on the hardest parts.I've been able to use these skills to help classmates in my masters and PhD classes in economics at American University, where my PhD is in progress. I also have experience as a math tutor in high school and have facilitated numerous training workshops in my professional work history.I'm able to work with individuals and small groups. My areas of expertise are mathematics and economics, especially algebra, calculus, microeconomic theory and macroeconomic theory. These subjects are all related and I find it really interesting that they can help with understanding human behavior on a small and grand scale. When I'm not working on economics coursework, I love hanging out with my dog and doing outdoorsy things with friends like camping, hiking, and going to the beach. I also love cooking and I've found that if I just learn and understand how things work I will never have to memorize a recipe. Same thing with math and econ.

I received my Bachelor's degree in Economics, summa cum laude, from Hunter College, and my J.D. from Harvard Law School. At Hunter College, I studied economics, mathematics and philosophy and earned a 4.0 in all math courses (I completed math courses up to multi-variable calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra) and in graduate school my studies focused on business, finance, and corporate law. I also received a graduate level certificate in Advanced Calculus with Financial Engineering Applications from Baruch College's esteemed Financial Mathematics department and I am CFA candidate. The subjects I tutor are math (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus), statistics, finance, economics, SAT Math and LSAT prep.I believe that classroom instruction is not always the most effective pedagogical approach for all students, and that 1-on-1 instruction can be tremendously helpful in overcoming obstacles and developing stronger learning and test-taking techniques.I enjoy this work because I find the subjects interesting and enjoy helping students succeed at something and develop confidence. My professional interests include economics, finance, value investing, venture investing, derivatives trading, and commercial real estate. In addition to my academic and professional interests, I enjoy art, film, poker, technology, muay thai kickboxing and basketball.

My diverse professional experience and teaching abilities make me the ideal candidate to become your next tutor. While completing my liberal arts education at top-ranking Williams College, my passion for teaching is reflected by the numerous positions that I held during that time and beyond. In fact, I received formal teaching offers during my senior year but opted to challenge myself to explore beyond my comfort zone. A week after graduating in early June of 2006, I began my tenure as Equities Analyst for Kellogg Capital Group, the largest private specialist firm on Wall Street at the time.Although my lifestyle became financially comfortable, I longed to contribute in an intrinsically rewarding capacity. This led to my tutoring for Prep for Prep, a life-changing leadership development program. I soon found myself looking forward to the trading bell’s closing ring so that I could lose the fancy suit jacket, roll up my sleeves, and dig into the teaching trenches anywhere from the Starbucks down the street from the NYSE to some unfamiliar neighborhoods throughout New York City. Fortunately, as soon as I began planning my exit from the corporate world, I was provided a handsome severance package when I was laid off from such a promising first job out of college; while about half of the company’s employees of all ranks were let go, the unprofitable firm would later be sold. This turn of events set the stage for the priceless classroom exploratory phase I was seeking.I increased my workload with Prep for Prep and added two more positions to form a full-time schedule of teaching: I now also taught SAT Verbal at Leader’s Academy and New York Regents English Language Arts at the Harlem Children’s Zone. I was successful in these endeavors by relying on the multiple teaching styles and techniques that I had mastered to ensure that students were indeed grasping lessons during our limited contact. My newfound exposure to Harlem combined with the professional development that I received at HCZ piqued my interest for issues in education that transcend the classroom. I reduced my tutoring responsibilities to pursue an opportunity as Manager of Academic Programs for Junior Achievement, a world-famous nonprofit organization that teaches financial literacy, workplace readiness, and entrepreneurship. Training thousands of New York City students made me want to be a lead teacher so I moved on to become Director of Admissions and 7th Grade English Teacher for a private K-8 school in Newark where I helped restructure the admissions department and led an aggressive recruitment campaign that saw the school receive an unprecedented number of applicants in a bear market.Feeling the urge to pursue more adventurous pastures, I relocated to Medellin, Colombia, where I spent most of the last three years refining my Spanish. While in Medellin, I lent my services as a research consultant for a local nonprofit organization that provides health and wellness programming. I am now resuming my career in the U.S. as I continue applying to part-time graduate programs. In the interim, I am an instructor for Varsity Tutors and develop descriptive analysis for all of Major League Baseball’s online entities. I am currently pursuing my graduate studies.

I have a Bachelor's degree from Yale in the History of Science and a Master's degree from Johns Hopkins SAIS in International Relations and Economics. I have over ten years of tutoring experience, working with students anywhere on the spectrum from kindergarten to graduate school, with a particular focus on high school. I enjoy tutoring a range of subjects, but particularly Math, Science, Economics, and Foreign Languages. Whatever the subject, I am a proponent of the "Teach a man to fish..." approach: rather than just focusing on giving my students the answer, I enjoy helping them understand how to think about the concepts. Even if Trigonometry sounds dry, for example, I have seen how explaining it in terms of "pretend you want to hit the baseball farther than anyone else and you need to figure out what angle will get you there" can make a light bulb go on. All of my previous students have had different learning styles, personalities, and interests; one of my favorite things about tutoring is figuring out what makes them tick so I can come up with appropriate examples. When I have time, I am a huge fan of traveling and skiing. I think traveling is a great way to both discover new places and reflect on where I'm from, and skiing speaks for itself whether in California, Japan, Austria, or Switzerland. Of course, I can't be on the road all the time, so for the 95% of the time that I'm at home I enjoy crossword puzzles, music, watching sports (especially the Lakers and the Packers), and finding cheap and tasty food all over the city.

I used to teach economics at Tufts University. All of my upper level graduate courses were at Harvard MIT and was a research assistant at the National Bureau of Economic Research. I've spent several decades on Wall Street focused on very complex financial instruments. Many of my students went to the most prestigious business and law schools in the country and have become quite well-known and successful.I am a father of 17 year old twins who are flourishing. In addition to teaching academic material I also I spend a great deal of time coaching athletics. I always love it when someone I am teaching overcomes an obstacle. That light bulb goes off and it is very rewarding.

I am a 2015 graduate of Texas Christian University with a double major in Economics and Political Science. I am currently an Associate Account Executive for Crystal & Company in the Employee Benefits department. While I was a student, I worked for 2 years as an in-home tutor for kids grades 6-12 and focused on study skills, organization and assistance with homework in math, English and Spanish and SAT preparation. During the fall of 2014 I worked with the TCU Athletics Department where I help the TCU Student-Athletes with Calculus and Economics. I enjoy tutoring both Math and English/writing because I am an analytical thinker and like to encourage students to challenge themselves and reach new goals. I was a Dean's List student for 6 semesters and have been awarded the Priscilla Tate research prize for Women and Gender studies at TCU as well as 2015 Texas A&M Outstanding Undergraduate Research prize for the Project for Equity.Outside of work, I enjoy watching college football, being active outdoors and spending time with my friends. My experience as a tutor has helped me learn how to cater to different learning styles and has taught me how to approach issues from different angles. I am both prompt and professional and would love to help your child grow into a successful student.
