I am a graduate of University of Missouri-Kansas City and have extensive teaching experience in Spanish language and culture. My hometown is Topeka, the Capital of the Great state of Kansas. I received K-12 teaching licenses in the states of Kansas and Missouri. I have studied abroad at the University of Madrid in Spain and have taught Spanish to adolescents and adults. I also have a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Baker University and a Masters Degree in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Central Baptist Theological Seminary. I love working with individuals who have the desire to learn Spanish because it demonstrates that they are willing to reach beyond themselves are willing to step into the language and culture of others. I believe that there are a few key steps that must be taken before being able to successfully facilitating learning: getting to know a student and building trust, discovering strengths and finding ways to utilize them, and building a love of learning and an enthusiasm for the process of learning, while continuing to feed that enthusiasm, especially when challenges are encountered in the learning process. Without these steps, the progress of the student will be much slower, if there is any at all.One on one teaching sessions are uniquely designed to better accomplish these steps. Perhaps your student's teacher has been too busy to really get to know him or her, or perhaps their personalities simply clash, which makes the learning process much more difficult for your child. This could have even led them to build barriers between themselves and learning.I can break down those barriers, discover your child's strengths and use those to help them conquer their difficulties. I worked as a camp counselor for 5 years with ages 9-18, and I've helped a lot of kids find their confidence and achieve things that they thought were impossible. I started helping 4th graders with their writing portfolios at my old elementary school when I was fifteen, and in college I did a teaching internship there and at my old high school.I also gained a lot of experience in 6 years of creative writing workshops. I was lucky enough to go to Interlochen Arts Academy to study writing for the last two years of high school, and I spent all of college continuing to rigorously study the art of writing and the creative collaboration/critical experience one gets from writing workshops. I also learned a lot from getting a liberal arts education, where not learning what to learn but how to learn is the goal.

I attended a small private liberal arts college for my undergrad which allowed me the opportunity to explore multiple fields of interest. I have a BA with majors in history and political science in minors in Asian studies and international politics. I took a year off of school to try my hand at working. During that year I worked at a living history site, where I educated visitors of all ages on early American history. I went back to grad school for a Master's in Public Administration with a specialty in Organizational Development. I worked full time while putting myself through grad school. It's important to gain life experience as well as educational experience. Both make you a well-rounded lifelong learner. I continued to work as a nontraditional educator in parks in recreation. Once I earned by MPA, I went back to school (again while working full time) and earned my Doctorate in Education. I love helping students of all ages learn about history, earth science, political philosophy and literature. In my free time I coach softball and soccer--two sports I played at varsity level in college.

My main course of studies was the discipline of social studies, including but not limited to United States History or American History, World History, Civics and Economics or Government, World Geography, and African American Studies. My focus is on helping students understand American government and American history. I try to tie in specific contribution of the many different communities and cultures that have made up the United States to help make clear the many contributions that went into making the country what it is today.My teaching philosophy is to start in a lecture format to set up the background of the lesson and then expand to a conversation where all parties can contribute to the discussion as we learn how and why situations and concepts evolved as they did.
