I am agraduate of the University of Minnesota with a B.A. in History (minor in French) and Masters degree in the History of Art and Architecture from Boston University.I have worked with students of varying backgrounds, abilities, and goals since 2013, having first started with Americorps' College Possible (College Access Program) and then working for several tutoring organizations, focusing on both test prep and academics.Through these experiences, I have found it most rewarding to help each student realize his or her goal and aid them in accomplishing it with distinction. I enjoy determining the unique approach necessary for each student to succeed.Furthermore, I am passionate about not only teaching my students the material necessary to improve their scores on standardized tests and their grades in their classes, but also keeping them engaged as they progress through any test prep/academic programs. As someone who has been working with high schoolers since college, I find that I am able to connect with students on the important process of excelling both in school and on standardized tests such as the ACT, SAT, PSAT, SSAT, ISEE, and the AP/SAT Subject Test exams. Though these provide schools with a glimpse into the student, I want to help them put their best foot forward. In my spare time, I enjoy spending quality time with my wife and friends, exploring and relaxing at the nearby beaches, learninghistorical trivia, cooking, and exercise.

I am currently a professional school counselor. I am also a certified teacher for grades K-5 and I have experience as an Early Intervention Program teacher for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade. My favorite subject is Math- and I have tutored struggling middle and high school students and helped them meet standards that they were previously failing. I am also interested in helping students enjoy reading and discussing what they have read. I believe that the key to learning is making the material accessible and real to a student, so I do my best to explain at the student's level and relate the subject to the student's interests.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Arizona State University, along with post-baccalaureate work in Secondary Education, History and Political Science. I also hold a Masters in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University. I am currently gearing toward a Masters in History.I have over twenty-seven years of experience as a classroom teacher, and have also been a tutor during that time. I have taught middle school mathematics, science, psychology as an elective, and social studies, which is my favorite subject. In social studies, I teach history (U.S. or World), Civics and Geography. I also tutor all the subjects mentioned, and have also taught religious studies.I enjoy tutoring most age and age groups, especially fourth grade through high school.I must also mention I work a great deal in developing the writing skills of my students, especially involving the use of the Six Traits of Writing. In tutoring, I work with a student's most effective style of learning. Anything can be learned if it reaches a student through their best learning modality. I know from experience anyone can and does learn. It is simply a matter of finding your own style, and I can help in that area. Oftentimes, clients choose a tutor because they share a similar hobby. In my spare time, I enjoy living history as a reenactor, especially with the American Civil War. I am also an avid reader, focusing on history and short story fiction. I am also a huge Disneyland fan. Finally, I enjoy most competitive sports, including baseball, basketball, football, and ice hockey (which I have played).

I am the first person in my family to be born in the United States. My entire family are immigrants and it was only recently that my last remaining family members came over from China. This meant that growing up I was the eldest of all the children in my family. Being an only child myself, I had a lot of responsibility to take care and help raise my cousins who are all younger. My interest and experience in tutoring comes from helping my cousins through school. My oldest cousin after me is three younger which means she was about to learn everything that I just had. When I a senior in high school, my cousins ranged from elementary school to freshman in high school. Going off to college led me to reflect on all the years I spent helping my cousins through school. Ever since middle school I would help them with math, writing, reading, and even on science projects. Moreover, I taught them about school itself how to learn, how to make friends, where to go for lunch, and so on.Watching them grow up made me understand what teaching and tutoring really means. Having the support from someone older who can also assist in academics builds confidence that students will carry throughout their academic careers. This is especially important at a young age. Even when I was at college my cousins would call from time to time about a problem they were having, school related or not. This is why my preference for being a tutor at Varsity Tutors is middle school and high school. I'd like to help students build their academic confidence while learning what they need to for school.

AP Biology Tutor • +13 Subjects
Hey guys, I'm Rish! I am a recent graduate at the University of Georgia where I got my bachelor's degree in biology. In addition to being a student, I served as a cultural executive of the club Coexist UGA, a persistent service member, and worked as a UGA peer tutor. Handling these different tasks has improved my time management skills as well as becoming a more efficient worker, a skill I constantly try to evoke in my students. Being a cultural executive has allowed me to improve in my oral communication, cultural competence, and leadership skills which I make sure to translate into my tutoring. As a peer tutor, I constantly work to improve as both a leader and a team member and always make my students believe in themselves as this is the most important part of the job. I try to first understand how the student learns, and structure appointments based on that to give the student the most for their time. I constantly engage in conversation with my students to create a warm and comfortable environment, and to make sure that you feel confident around me if questions arise. I also work to be a team player, as tutoring is a constant interaction and requires effective communication. I have experience in both one on one tutoring and group tutoring, diversifying my methods of teaching and interacting with students. In addition to my tutoring experience, I have taken many science and math classes that have prepared me when tutoring. Classes such as Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Statistics, and several other Biology related classes such as cellular biology making me more comfortable to help with such classes and breaking down complex concepts. I have also taken the DAT, scoring a 20 AA and 23 PAT which I am glad to help with as well if needed. I look forward to meeting you guys and making you confident with the material, and most importantly showing you that you can learn anything!

5th Grade ELA (in Spanish) Tutor • +28 Subjects
From the age of 7 or 8 I have always had a lot of curiosity about other people and cultures and find hearing other people talk about themselves much more interesting than me talking about myself! Learning a foreign language and speaking it with native people, especially in their own countries is really thrilling. It opens up a side of ourselves that was previously unexplored and broadens our understanding of people outside our normal circle of family and friends. As a tutor I want to ensure that students are able to clearly articulate their goals, however practical or ambitious and ensure that they overcome any barriers achieving their stated goals. I have a BA in French and Spanish from the University of Wales in the UK with a Distinction oral proficiency in Spanish. I also have passed the French final oral (Part 1) exam at the Institute of Linguists. I am keen to help all types of students advance and accomplish their goals.

I received two Bachelor's degrees from East Carolina University: one in English and the other in Political Science. I received a certificate in Technical and Professional Communication. I also attended ECU for graduate school; I received a Master of Arts in English with a concentration in both creative and technical writing. When I wasn't writing poetry and nonfiction essays, I was concentrating on technical editing and grammar. While I graduate school, I had the opportunity to tutor student-athletes in English courses including literature and composition. I have taught and supported students in various English-related subjects to include but not limited to: composition, creative writing, business writing, technical writing, research and citing, oral presentations, social media, and graphic design, etc.My teaching experience has spanned across two-year community colleges and four-year HBCUs. I have taught in a higher education setting for nearly 10 years. From traditional students to veterans, I have experience teaching and supporting a vast array of students with a vast array of backgrounds. I feel strongly about teaching each student where they are respectively and individually. I am very keen on researching and citing, as I worked in university libraries for many years. I am guided by a learner-centered approach. I think it is important to meet students' needs and develop their interests and values. I believe that learning is an individual process of making sense of a student's experiences and beliefs. My approach to teaching is to organize my courses into a series of key topics and spend time preparing clear lectures on each, as well as fostering engagement through discussions. I tend to guide students to think as professionals, as opposed to beginners.

Frequently Asked Questions
Mathematical Logic focuses on the structure and validity of arguments, rather than calculations. Instead of solving equations, you'll work with logical statements, symbolic notation, and proofs—learning to determine whether an argument is true, false, or unprovable. This shift from procedural computation to abstract reasoning can feel challenging at first, but it builds critical thinking skills that apply far beyond mathematics. Many students find that personalized 1-on-1 instruction helps them transition from "following steps" to understanding why logical arguments work the way they do.
Proofs require you to think about why something is true, not just that it is true—and that's where many students get stuck. Expert tutors help by breaking down the logical structure of proofs, showing you how to identify what you know, what you're trying to prove, and what reasoning bridges the gap. They ask guiding questions that help you see patterns and develop your own proof strategies, rather than just showing you the answer. This personalized approach builds confidence and gives you tools to tackle unfamiliar problems independently.
Symbolic notation—like truth tables, quantifiers (∀, ∃), and logical operators (∧, ∨, ¬)—can feel like learning a foreign language at first. Tutors help by translating between everyday language and formal symbols, so you understand what the notation actually means before diving into complex expressions. Regular practice with varied examples helps patterns stick, and a tutor can slow down where you need it most, clarifying notation in context rather than moving at textbook pace. Many students find this incremental approach makes logic symbols feel natural rather than intimidating.
A valid proof uses only accepted axioms, definitions, and previously proven statements to reach its conclusion—with no logical gaps or unjustified leaps. A weak proof might have the right idea but lack rigor or clarity, or it might rely on circular reasoning. Expert tutors teach you to evaluate proofs critically: Does each step follow from the previous ones? Are all assumptions stated? Is the argument complete? Learning to recognize these elements helps you both critique existing proofs and construct your own. This judgment-building is hard to develop alone, but personalized feedback makes it concrete and transferable.
Start by identifying what you're given (premises) and what you need to show (conclusion), then look for logical connections—Do you recognize any patterns from earlier problems? Are there useful definitions or theorems you can apply? Can you work backward from the conclusion to find a path? Tutors help you develop a problem-solving process that works consistently, rather than relying on guessing or hoping. They also teach you to organize your thinking on paper: writing out what you know, sketching potential proof structures, and testing your reasoning before formalizing it. This deliberate approach reduces frustration and builds the confidence to tackle harder problems.
Math anxiety in logic often comes from feeling like "you either get it or you don't"—but logic is a skill that improves with practice and guidance, not a fixed talent. Personalized tutoring helps by meeting you where you are, celebrating progress on specific concepts, and removing the pressure of keeping up with a class pace. Tutors create a safe space to ask questions without judgment, work through mistakes to understand where reasoning breaks down, and show you that struggling is part of the learning process. Over time, seeing yourself solve problems you once found impossible is one of the best confidence builders.
It's helpful if your tutor understands your course's approach and expectations, since different textbooks and instructors emphasize different proof styles or logical systems. When you connect with a tutor through Varsity Tutors, it's worth sharing your syllabus, textbook, or recent assignments so they can align their explanations with what your instructor expects. That said, the core principles of logic are universal—whether you're using a formal systems approach, natural deduction, or another method—and expert tutors are skilled at translating between approaches. This flexibility means you get support tailored to your course while building deeper conceptual understanding.
