I graduated from Swarthmore College in May of 2011 with a major in Mandarin Chinese and minors in Biology and Philosophy, and I've been tutoring with Varsity since the fall of 2011. I tutor all different subjects and test prep and love tutoring Chinese. Chinese has been my passion since ninth grade, when I began studying the language and culture at Bard High School Early College. Much of my teaching experience has involved Chinese, most intensely during the summer of 2011 when I worked full time at a school in Queens teaching Mandarin-speaking children how to read and write Chinese characters. My first time teaching Chinese was while in college: I tutored two second graders in an after school program. These experiences truly inspired me and I greatly enjoy tutoring. I have also worked teaching English to middle school students in China and tutoring math, science, and reading to elementary school children as part of an after school program in Chester, PA. I currently teach art with a partner to a group of Mandarin-speaking elementary school students. I've been to China twice to study, teach, and travel and hope to visit again soon.Although based on a core curriculum designed to allow students to reach their goals, my teaching style is also very spontaneous, intuitive, and innovative. I???ve found that an interactive approach works best. When students are engaged with the materials and encouraged to make connections for themselves, both inside and outside the classroom, they naturally self-motivate, learn faster, and remember more. I???ve also found that making use of visual aids and emphasizing practical applications of the material can really help encourage students. In addition to Chinese, linguistics is a passion of mine. I have been independently working on a linguistics project for over a year now involving the Afro-Asiatic language family (which includes Semitic languages such as Hebrew), and I am applying to graduate school in the field this fall. I've always loved Biology and while in college I did research both in the fields of Molecular Plant Biology and Neurobiology.I have two cats, a fish, and a turtle. In my free time I enjoy painting, drawing, playing saxophone, trombone and violin, writing poetry, gardening, hiking, and spending time with those I love.

I had a second major in Psychology and three minors, including French, cognitive science, and TESOL. Following graduation, I joined the Peace Corps and worked in Benin (West Africa) as an English teacher for two years, taking many opportunities along the way to do projects focused on women’s empowerment and girls’ education. I tutored many students in English, helping some catch up in class and also working with gifted students on areas that interested them. I stayed a third year to coordinate a peer-education health project and returned to the Chicago area in August 2013. I tutor a broad range of subjects, but really enjoy working with students on French language and English writing and grammar because, throughout my years of studying these subjects, I’ve come up with a lot of fun and creative ways to learn them that I’d love to share with students. I’ve worked very hard to prepare for standardized tests and I understand the difficulties they can sometimes pose, so I’m also excited to help students tackle these important exams. I strongly believe in the value of education and that every day is an opportunity to learn something new. In terms of hobbies, I enjoy gymnastics, circus arts (I was a performer for four years), hiking (I summited Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2011), cooking, and reading (especially science fiction).

I went to Concordia University - Wisconsin for my undergrad and majored in Elementary/Middle School Education with an emphasis in mathematics. A few years later, I went back to CUW and got a degree in Alternative Education. I currently work full time at a high school teaching math, but have experience with teaching math in grades 1-9 previously as well and reading skills and comprehension to grades 1-9. Before working with Varsity Tutors, I spent a few of my off summers tutoring privately for friends and family whose students were falling behind or whom needed a little "push" going in to the next school year.I love getting to know the students, their personalities and their quirkiness. That moment when students finally "get it" after struggling with a concept or working really hard on a subject is incredibly rewarding both for me and the student. I am an alumnus of Iowa State University where I received my Bachelor of Architecture. Upon graduation, I relocated to Atlanta, Georgia and after becoming a licensed Architect I finally attained my dream of living in New York City! Now that I have established myself within my career, I am motivated to reconnect with the academic community through tutoring. Mathematics was always my favorite subject in school and while attending college I briefly tutored Trigonometry by leading peer facilitated group sessions. In these meetings, and in my career, I have practiced a variety of problem-solving techniques that have helped me excel within my profession and I plan on integrating them into our lessons. Outside of my professional pursuits I enjoy running, reading, photography and exploring the concrete jungle of New York City while trying every delicious cuisine it has to offer.
