School and learning new things have always been my favorite part of life - which is probably why I stayed in school until I was 30 years old! My Bachelor's degree from Santa Clara University is in Art History with a History minor; my Master's degree from UCLA is in Medieval History with a focus on Latin and French; and I earned the Juris Doctor (law) degree at UC Berkeley. I later returned to school while working as a lawyer so I could learn more new things in my spare time (a few classes in Spanish at Caada College and graduate courses in Theology at Xavier University). And I even brought math workbooks home to have some fun with numbers and problems.Sharing my enjoyment of learning is my passion! Tutoring students is the best way I have found to share what I love about learning with others who are also learning, to help them be the very best student they can be and reap the personal rewards of their successes. It is my fondest wish for all students to genuinely enjoy their time in school, to find fun in learning new things and feel great about themselves when they put the time and attention in to do their very best.Over the years, I have tutored middle and high school students in Math, French and Latin. I have also worked with young elementary students as a volunteer at an after-school homework club and a summer reading program. It's tough to pick a favorite subject to tutor but I think it's languages (French or Latin), with math a close second. Learning another language can lead to so many interesting things in life, it is so worth the effort! And math always has that satisfying right answer. :)What I seem to be best at as a tutor is helping students break down material into bite-sized chunks that they can understand, apply and master. That lays a strong foundation for what comes next which, again, we break down into manageable parts before putting them together to see the whole in good form. The lighting up of my student's face when things that seemed difficult or mysterious, perhaps even overwhelming, come together in a way that makes sense to them puts a gold star on my day every time!

I am a graduate of Sewanee: The University of the South, where I received a Bachelor of Arts in Russian and Art History with a focus in modern and contemporary art. I spent a semester studying at the European University at St. Petersburg in the Master's program of Russian Culture and the Arts, combining my love of both art and Russian culture. As a tutor at my University's writing center, I edited papers for a variety of subjects and worked with art majors to develop honors theses. I love brainstorming creative approaches to papers with students, and I may be one of the few recent graduates who still thinks grammar is exciting. My enthusiasm is contagious! I am a North Carolina native and an avid college basketball fan. I enjoy backpacking and hiking--I recently completed the Camino de Santiago, hiking five weeks from France to Spain.

I am currently in my final semester at the University of Kansas. I am preparing to graduate with my Bachelor of Arts in Classical Languages with a focus on Greek, Latin, and Arabic. During my time at the University of Kansas, I tutored professionally for over three years for individual classes as well as standardized test preparation. I am able to tutor a wide variety of subjects; however, my passion lies in languages and history. In my experience tutoring non-English speakers, I have learned how to solidify short-term knowledge to the long term and apply this not only to languages, but many other subjects, as well. I am a strong believer in the value and necessity of education, which is why I intend to make it my life long career. As such, I try to encourage a fun but results oriented learning environment for all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, my salt water aquariums, and spending time with my husky.

Throughout this time I have worked with both regular and special needs children in helping them improve their communication needs. This includes social language as well as verbal and written language. I have also tutored students in basic math such as arithmetic and algebra. I have a love for languages. I am an American Sign Lanuage interpreter and I speak conversational French. My philosophy for learning is learning should be fun. In the 1970’s I attended Southern Methodist University for two years to pursue a degree in the Philosophy of Religion. It was fascinating at the time, however, I have little interest in pursuing that topic. I am grateful to have that knowledge as it is very useful for the study of history. Then I quit to become a working Jazz guitar player. I received a degree in Jazz Performance from the University of North Texas. My great passion is Classical History. I study History to understand human. As Thucydides said, “Human nature does not change”.Roman history is so fascinating. A person can’t master all the different periods of Roman History. We see ourselves in them; we see them in us. We see their influence in many areas of our society. To understand the modern world, it is critical to understand the classical world. I a currently writing a Master’s Thesis on the rise and development of Roman autocracy at the university of Dallas.I also have a great love of Quantum Mechanics and General Relativity. As they two most successful scientific paradigms of the 20th Century, they are fantastic standards for evaluating our use of language. With these paradigms, we see how we use language and language colors and influences us.

I've been teaching English literature and composition since graduate school. If you need help with something language- or literature-related, I can probably do it!

I graduated from the University of Miami with a dual degree in Political Science and Philosophy with minors in Spanish and Criminology. After five years working in political consulting and government affairs, I am studying to attend law school. I have experience tutoring second grade through high school, as well as undergraduate students on a variety of subjects. As a tutor, I am patient, friendly, and I go above and beyond to accommodate for each students' individual learning style.

I was a Latin teacher for over twenty years teaching all levels of Latin including Advanced Placement and collegiate Latin at multiple schools and universities. I am now living my dream of being an attorney, and the content knowledge and study habits I developed in high school and college helped me on my journey, and I'd love to help you on yours and keep my Latin skills sharp.

Teaching is my passion! I home schooled my own children and I have taught students of all ages, though mostly elementary and middle school, in private and public school settings.
