Session Summaries by Physiology Tutors

Lancaster, CA Physiology tutoring
We covered chapters 6 and 7 in the textbook, mostly on cell transport/parts of the cell/differences between animal and plant cells, etc. The student seemed pretty well prepared to discuss the topics. He was very appreciative of the material reviewed to help with his quiz. We talked about study skills and high yield topics for the AP exam and how to plan for those. This was the first session, so this will be the baseline for progress.

The student and I went over a ton of material in preparation for her cell bio/ biochem exam tomorrow. Specifically, we discussed the who, what, where, and why of glycolysis, the TCA cycle, the pentose phosphate pathway--highlighting the regulatory steps of each pathway. She had a good grasp of most of the pathways, but struggled a bit with the pentose phosphate pathway. However, I think she can now answer the four questions (who, what, where, and why) of this pathway with ease. Her attitude was great, considering we had 10 densely-packed PowerPoints to go over. I did suggest studying strategies for her to help with her exam tomorrow; I told her to be able to answer the four questions above for each pathway. This allows her to see trends and make connections between the different pathways. I also suggested going over two lecture PowerPoints at a time in preparation for her next exam. We did focus on what was most important for her to understand--the metabolic pathways. The student as a great attitude and knows the material well. If she can understand the big picture first, it will make tackling the details much easier. I believe she will do much better than she expects on this exam!!

At this session the student and I went over all of the material from the last 9 weeks of her Pre-AP Biology class in preparation for her exam on Monday. We went over some PowerPoints, and I asked her questions on the different topics. We also went over some practice questions to make sure she understood the concepts completely. I also provided some ways to help her remember some things by giving her analogies. I suggested that she take a little bit more time before the exam to memorize some of the specific details. I believe that she will do well.

The student and I went over mostly energetics today. We spent a lot of time with Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, entropy, and equilibrium. We went through tons of practice problems and really solidified all of those concepts. He has a test on Tuesday, so he will review some more this evening and then we will do a run through tomorrow of all the concepts covered on the exam. He really made a lot of improvement in one session!
