A good teacher - in my opinion - is one that develops a sensitivity to the joy that comes with learning. That joy - much the same in the processes that bring joy of games - is to be found everywhere in the nature of the human brain; a living computer; a vast of potential of weighted logic gates which give rise to the substance of what we call learning when we - by our activities - so organize them.Even the most bizarre or inspired art - so I attest - comes from the negotiation and change of this substance of our minds, and there is real joy in that!

When I was a high school student at Central High in Philadelphia, I struggled with some of the concepts in AP Chemistry, Biology and Math. It took me years of studying to understand that, sometimes it can really help to have the material presented in alternative ways. Having learned that, I sought help from various sources -- sometimes other people, sometimes other books, videos or materials -- and was able to overcome these hurdles. Now a laboratory manager and technician in a leading neuroscience laboratory in Philadelphia with a Master's Degree in Pharmacology, I'm interested in helping students as they work through their own struggles to grasp key concepts in their math and science courses. With a strong background in writing, and years of experience tutoring writing skills at Penn State University and as the new editor of Philly's Two.One.Five Magazine, I am also available to help students develop their writing and composition skills.

Hello!I have a Ph.D. in Psychology from CUNY and have both taught and tutored for years. I have worked with all sorts of students, from first graders to adults. My students have ranged from gifted to LD to ADHD to perfectly average. Academically, I have expertise in learning, memory, emotional processes, and behavioral neuroscience, so I am well-trained in understanding the processes that can block learning. I also have a good sense of humor, and tutoring has always been a pleasant experience for both the student and for me.Just as I have never shied away from learning difficulties, I also have taught some very technical courses at Queens College, such as Neuroscience of Memory and Psychometrics. My evaluations (from both faculty and students) as a college professor are universally excellent, and reflect my ability to motivate students, clearly structure lessons, and make very complex material understandable.I have taught college-level statistics many times, and have done graduate-level statistics as part of my research. SPSS is no problem.Name a field of psychology: I've probably taught it, and can tutor it. These would include developmental, neurobiological, personality, clinical, and cognitive. Most people need to learn two things about writing: how to make it natural, and how to organize it. I was taught by outstanding writing teachers: write first, organize later. This is how I work with my students.Tutoring is all about communication. I can take complex, forbidding material and break it down in different ways, until the light goes on.

Hi! I'm Bobbie. I am an experienced tutor who is passionate about helping students become better readers and writers. Reading is so important because it is how we build knowledge. By providing creative, engaging lessons tailored to the needs and learning styles of each student, I help students improve reading accuracy, confidence, and understanding. I make abundant use of writing in my instruction, as it is a powerful tool for improving reading. At the same time, writing is a critical skill that must be taught in its own right. I show my students how to break the writing process into small, manageable pieces, as well as apply proper mechanics and grammar.A thirst for knowledge and love of reading led me to study English as an undergraduate. A desire to impart my knowledge and love of learning to children led me to complete a master's degree in education. I have taught English in both the middle and high school classroom and have years of experience tutoring students of all agesfrom 2nd grade to adult. I let my students know that I have high expectations and believe that they can reach them.I have a lifelong love of literature, which helps me make reading fun and engaging for students. My aim is to be as creative, imaginative, and stimulating as possible. Learning should not be boring.Outside of tutoring, I enjoy cooking, reading, cultural events, and spending time with my husband and our companion animals. I enjoy visiting new places and have travelled widely in North America and Europe.

I've always liked to travel and to know people from different countries. I've always felt that we are all alike, in spite of our "differences". I have friends from around the world, from travelling and from my jobs in international departments of publishing companies, which is where I have worked for over 20 years. I lived in England for 10 years and loved living in Europe, where I was able to reach so many different countries. I majored in French in college, starting to learn it at the age of 10 years. I became a big fan of French history, literature, films, food and people. I've taught ESL for about 6 years, to people from different countries and I love to help my students learn to use a tool that will help them in their work, studies, and lives and will make a big difference to their happiness!I love cooking, growing plants and vegetables, listening to vintage rock music, cooking new recipes, seeing films, going to concerts of classical music and rock music, and singing.

I received my Bachelor of Arts from Johns Hopkins University, with my degree in Anthropology, and a minor in Women and Gender Studies. Education has always been extremely important in my life, and subsequently I have sought out ways to share my knowledge with students as a tutor. I have tutored students ranging from the first grade through high school; every age/grade brings new and exciting challenges. I have experience successfully tutoring all general school subjects (English, History, Math, Science, Spanish), including English (ESL) to Spanish-speaking students, but my favorite subject to tutor would probably have to be English. I love challenging my students to accurately and grammatically express themselves through writing stories and learning new vocabulary words. I enjoy teaching them tricks to eventually self-correct themselves, use context clues to answer reading questions, and gain a better understanding of their English material. As a tutor, my style is to have fun with my students and establish a friendly bond. I find that this makes the learning come much easier, and paints a picture of their understanding beyond the homework page. I like to know what my students are interested in, how they enjoy school, their favorite subjects, their day-to-day, their extra-curricular activities, etc. Usually I find that my students already possess all the tools within to overcome any academic difficulty they may be experiencing. They simply need a little personal attention and encouragement to bring out their confidence and comfort with a subject, as well as a platform where they feel safe to ask any questions. Outside of tutoring, I enjoy staying active through yoga, running, dance, horseback riding, and sports. I also love to read and discover new music.

I graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology Physician Assistant Program in 2012 with a bachelor's degree in science and a minor in Psychology. After graduating, I moved to Boston, where I worked as a Physician Assistant in the Cardiac Surgery Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Medicine is an amazing profession, but my favorite part of the job was when I got the opportunity to be an educator. Whether it was patients trying to understand what was happening to their bodies, prospective students seeing if the field of medicine was for them, medical students working on their clinical rotations, or new hires learning the ropes, getting the chance to sit down with people and share my knowledge and love of the material was consistently the highlight of my day. I've always had an aptitude for math and science and have been unofficially tutoring my peers since middle school. I believe that if you present any subject matter in a functional way that focuses on developing a strong understanding of the core concepts, you can make even the most complicated material accessible and applicable without the need for hours spent on rote memorization. This method has proven to instill a deep working knowledge of the material in students of all ages that will stay with them long after they pass the test. In my spare time I'm a comedian who enjoys both comedy improvisation and stand up, and I'm also a life-long gamer always on the hunt for that next great puzzle to solve!

I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at Northeastern University in Boston, MA working in cell biology. I have a B.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo (2010) and University of Pittsburgh (2016), respectively. My research focus in graduate school was on the surface properties of materials, specifically graphite and graphene, and I have extensive background in surface characterization techniques. I also am very knowledgable in chemistry subjects and am quickly learning various aspects of biology and cell biology pertaining to the blood (immune system) as part of my research at Northeastern.I have had great experiences tutoring and TA'ing in the past and found the work to be both rewarding (in helping others better learn a subject/topic) as well as beneficial for me (with reinforcing my knowledge, learning a topic I'm unfamiliar, and/or improving my teaching abilities). One of my goals as a tutor for Varsity Tutors is to teach subjects I'm passionate about, such as chemistry, to students who are interested in the topic but need some extra help. I have had wonderful tutors in the past help me in various subjects and believe I'm now at a point to help others better understand chemistry and various other topics, whether they want to pursue it as a major/career or be successful in the class. I'm excited to see what opportunities become available with Varsity Tutors and please feel free to contact me with any questions.
